Joystiq poll: Will the PS3 price affect your console combo?

Remember back in January when we asked you about your preferred console combo plan? We were operating under two assumptions then: that Nintendo's strategy involved being the second console of choice; and that the PS3 and Xbox 360 would be evenly priced. While we may have our worries about Sony's price, we almost forgot the impact this might have on Nintendo's diminutive Wii.

While there's the Wii60 console combo, will PlayStation 3 owners pony up the extra cash for a Wii? With a finite amount of entertainment dollars going to next-gen consoles, it could be argued that every extra dollar spent on a PS3 is one less being spent on another console like the Wii. So, what's it gonna be ...

Don't forget to vote at the Joystiq Poll here. We want to know what you feel!

PS3 controller can have rumble, says the accessories manufacturer

Sony said PS3 will have motion sensing and will remove the rumble because it interferes with sensors. But the manufacturer of gaming accessories says that having motion sensing and rumble is not hard which begs the question what is the real reason Sony took out the rumble?

Microsoft's Peter Moore recently led an intimate round-table discussion where a few select journalists were able to pluck his brain on current industry issues: PS3's price announcement, HD-DVD add-on for Xbox 360, downplaying rumors surrounding a portable Xbox, and actually admits he would like a Wii!

Sony to prevent selling of pre-owned PS3 games?

High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought, retail sources have revealed to GamesRadar.

It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won't own the PS3 titles that they've paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won't be the customer's to sell.

We assume that the thinking behind this move will ultimately be to stop PS3 games being resold several times - which currently snatches potential sales away from Sony - and to counter the impression in consumers' minds that games are only really worth their pre-owned price and are not worth buying new.

When we contacted Sony, it issued us with the following statement: "We have made all of the official announcements at E3 and cannot make any further comments at this time. We will be announcing more news running up to PlayStation 3's launch."

Above: While Sony revealed details of their PS3 online store at E3, they made no reference to a licensing system for next-gen software

UK PlayStation 3 comes in at £425, Sony loses its marbles

Sony has officially announced the U.K. price of the Playstation 3 as £425, representing the fully featured PS3 which comes in at $599 in the U.S. and 599 EUR in Europe. GamesIndustry.biz suggests that Sony won't be selling the cut down model over the pond, although this isn't confirmed. The PS3's price in England is higher than the console's price in the United States and Europe but we're not entirely surprised by this: British consumers are used to paying more for their consoles (although traditionally the U.K. gets identical or lower prices compared to Europe).

Merill Lynch: Xbox 360 to top PS3

Analysts at Merrill Lynch believe that the Xbox 360 will win the next console war, because of pricing. The report states: "The PS3 will not only be significantly more costly than Xbox 360 at launch, but will continue to operate at a cost disadvantage for several years... The Xbox 360 could be selling at half the price of PS3 in the latter half of 2006. Taking Sony’s weakened financial condition and Microsoft’s deep pockets into consideration, we conclude that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 should emerge as the early winner in the next round of the game console wars." Merrill Lynch predict nine million Xbox 360 sales by end 2006.

What the PS3 controller should have been?

With all the commotion surrounding the Wii and PS3 controllers at E3, it's hard not to get the feeling that motion tracking is the only new controller innovation out there. Fortunately for Gear, that's not the case. BodieLobus is a young company with a pretty new take on the traditional console controller, and we got a chance to go hands on with the Reflex Control unit.

Linux on PS3...A new report by Ars.

Ars discusses possiblity of linux on the PS3 and what that will mean for homebrew and linux enthusiasts.

Ever since the announcement of the PlayStation 3's November release date, the Internet has been abuzz with discussion over the promise of Ken Kutaragi's brief mention of Linux. However, as Kutaragi has been known to make statements that were subsequently changed (for example, in 2005, he said that the hard drive for the PS3 would be optional) many people held off on assuming that their shiny new PS3 would come prepackaged with Penguin goodness.

Now, more recent comments at E3 by SCE network system development manager Izumi Kawanishi suggest that each new PS3 will likely come not only with Linux preinstalled, but also a compiler and a set of development tools. If this is true, the PS3 might become the system of choice for Linux enthusiasts and homebrew developers.

IGN Rips Sony A New HDMI Port

Look, if you don't know your HDMI from your ICP or your HDCP/AACS, you, Mr. Consumer, might be F'ed by those SOB's at SCEI. IGN Gear takes Sony to task for ripping out the promised feature of HDMI output in the lower-priced PlayStation 3 model, implying that the company may be misleading consumers about the hi-def capabilities of the Blu-Ray enabled PS3 Jr.

If you aren't familiar with the latest info on the Blu-Ray copy protection scheme, I suggest you become so now. Basically the issue is that without HDMI output, HDCP copy protection will down-convert your signal to 540p. That may be fine for the Wii market, but now that Sony has finally said "Next generation has started", we expect some pretty pictures out of our $500 investment.

One of the most important things to take away from the corporate lashing is the following:

Until Sony announces a $499 PS3 design change, we at IGN Gear can, in good faith, only recommend that interested buyers steer clear of the lower-priced PS3 model or make the purchase fully aware that they may in future suffer severe repercussions when it comes to Blu-ray movie playback -- one of the key features that puts the PS3's price point above competing systems. 540p, the resolution that the Image Constraint Token will down-convert 1080p movies to in non-HDCP systems, is by no stretch of the imagination Hi-Def, and will, without major changes in PS3 design or studio policy, be the future of Blu-ray playback on the $499 PS3.

Yeah. Harsh. Keep your eyes peeled for more on Sony's plans to bait-and-switch consumers. —Michael McWhertor

Sony Europe Boss: "You Will Buy PS3, Regardless of Games"

Why is this man smiling? Because Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves is certain that you're gonna buy a PlayStation 3, you sucker. According to David, "We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even it didn't have games."

He's dead serious! Sorry, David, but as a hardcore console purchaser, even I am going to have a hard time justifying my purchase with no games. Fortunately, that won't be an issue, as some 15 titles are still expected for launch day.

That's the good news. The bad news is that PS3 titles like Heavenly Sword, Formula One, and Motorstorm may not hit retail shelves until March of 2007. Bummer. At least we can take comfort in the fact that they haven't announced Fantavision 2! From Reeves rather cryptic timeframe provided for EyeToy games, it doesn't look like we can expect the E3 demoed Eye of Judgment at launch either, but this may still be up in the air.

The full article with the SCEE CEO will be up soon, so look forward to more choice quotes from Sony execs real soon. —Michael McWhertor

PlayStation 3 Console Pre-Order Update

Sony have now announced the PS3 will be released in Europe on 17th November 2006.

There will be a 20GB hard drive version costing around £350 and a 60GB drive costing around £425.

The two models have very different specs. As well as different hard drives, the cheaper machine will not have in-built wireless or an HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) connector necessary for hooking the machine up to a High Definition TV or monitor.

However, both systems will come with a new controller. Sony has abandoned last year's boomerang-shaped prototype and reverted to a design similar to the current model for the PlayStation 2.

Gamestation have already starting taking pre-orders of the 60GB Premium version. We anticipate other online retailers to follow very shortly.

E3 2006: Warhawk PS3 Preview

Anyone that bought a PlayStation back in 1995 remembers Warhawk. It wasn't the greatest air combat game, to be sure, but it was good enough to warrant an improved sequel. Surprisingly, Sony never made a follow-up... until now. Warhawk shall rise again, this time as a launch title for the PlayStaton 3.

I got a chance to take the new Warhawk for a spin here at E3. The demo they're letting us play on the show floor only includes a single mission, but I came away from it feeling like I understood the game's premise and was given an idea of the console's graphical horsepower.

E3 2006: PlayStation 3 Launch Details (Prices and Dates)

Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment America, revealed additional details surrounding the PlayStation 3 launch today during the company's pre-E3 media gathering.

The system will launch worldwide in November 2006. Two different packs will be available, both containing a BluRay capable disc drive, a built-in hard drive, gigabit network capability, and support for multiple wireless controllers.

Said Hirai, "Every PlayStation 3 system will ship with a hard disk drive."

One pack will come with a 60GB hard drive, an HDMI video output, and card slots for Memory Stick storage media. Another, less expensive pack, will include a 20GB hard drive, but will not offer the memory card slots or the HDMI output. This cheaper pack, however, will still offer the typical Sony multi-out for Composite, S-Video, and Component video output up to 1080i.

Japanese gamers will be able to purchase the system first, on November 11, 2006. The 20GB model will be available for 59,800 yen, and the 60GB model will be available at an open price (likely 69,000 yen).

November 17, 2006 is the launch date for Europe and North America. The 20GB pack will sell for $499, while the 60GB pack will sell for $599.

Sony has much riding on PS3 launch

With the launch of its PlayStation 3 video game console six months away, Sony is gearing up for an all-out battle to put the electronics and entertainment conglomerate back on a growth path.

At stake is not just pole position in the $25 billion video game industry, but dominance in the next generation of DVDs, the commercial viability of Sony's Cell microchips and possibly control over living-room electronics around the world.

Sony needs a hit. During the past four years, its revenues were virtually flat as its operating profit rose 3 percent.

By comparison, rival consumer electronics company Matsushita Electric Industrial, the maker of Panasonic brand products, boosted its sales by 20 percent and saw its operating profit soar more than threefold.

Sony's new console, equipped with a Blu-ray next-generation disc drive and powered by the Cell microchip, is slated for early November release, setting the stage for a three-way showdown with Microsoft's already-released Xbox 360 and Nintendo's upcoming Wii.

Sony controls about two-thirds of the current-generation global game console market. Although the game unit accounted for less than 5 percent of the corporation's operating profit in the year ended March 31, the division's performance has sweeping effects on the Sony group.

"We will supply microchips and other key devices in large quantity for PlayStation 3. So, the impact will be felt in Sony's all core businesses," Sony Senior Vice President Takao Yuhara told reporters last week. "Our movie division is also holding high hopes on Blu-ray. PS3's success is a concern for the Sony group as a whole."

Army of Two Heads to PlayStation 3

Electronic Arts today unveiled details of a PlayStation 3 action title that has been kept top secret for the past year. Developed at EA’s boutique production house in Montréal, Army of Two will be released on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2007.

Alain Tascan, VP and General Manager of EA Montréal comments, “Army of Two is a first for EA in many ways. This is the first EA studio to be built entirely from the ground-up. This is EA’s first original title for the next-gen systems. Army of Two is the first game to put players inside tactical warfare involving Private Military Corporations.

The game will revolve around events similar to current day headlines where they will utilize two man strategies and tactics, transitioning between playing with intelligent Partner AI (PAI) and a live player. Two-player co-op is a big theme for the game, and EA says the game really shines when played with a friend. More details and screens will be released at E3.

Virtua Fighter 5 PlayStation 3 Exclusive

Sega of Japan confirmed today that the company's next fighting game, Virtua Fighter 5, which is being developed on Lindbergh arcade hardware, is also in development for Sony's forthcoming PlayStation 3 console.

Virtua Fighter 5 for PlayStation 3 will ship sometime in the Spring of 2007, and will be exclusive to Sony's console.

Nothing was revealed about console-specific features, except that once again players will be able to unlock dozens of costume and accessory choices for all of the in-game cast.

Currently, the arcade game is on test at select arcades in Japan.

TDK's first Blu-ray discs hit the shelves

TDK is shipping its first 25- and 50-gig Blu-ray discs, in both writeable and rewriteable formats.

FULL STORY:

The Blu-ray disc format, which will be used for all PlayStation 3 games, is slowly but surely hitting the market on the PC side, today with an announcement from TDK that it is shipping its first cartridge-free 50- and 25-gigabyte discs.

The price for a single 25 GB BD-R disc is $19.99, and it shoots all the way up to $59.99 for a 100 GB BD-RE (rewriteable). Obviously that's way out of any reasonable consumer's price range, but hopefully some early adopters will enjoy the new format and its extravagant prices will come down before the PS3 brings the format mainstream for both games and movies.

Here's some press-release babble; click below for the full press release with all the specs, and links to a bit more coverage.

"TDK is pleased to be the first to market with bare Blu-ray Disc media, which can be counted among the most significant product introductions in the company’s distinguished 70 year history," noted Bruce Youmans, TDK Vice President of Marketing.

PS3 needs to tighten its belt

From the rumor mill: PS3 is too big to fit in its case, Sony's still bidding on parts, and the OS might take up tons of memory.

FULL STORY:

Thanks to reports from a few different sources, things aren't looking any better for PS3 development today than they have been for the last few months. The newest updates center around the system being too big for its britches, and still very much unfinished.

• The Inquirer tells a tale of a PS3 that's far behind in development because Sony is still bidding on parts and the system is too big to fit in the case that's been on display at all the trade events.

We are about six months from launch, and debugging should be done, prototypes and dev kits should flow like water, and all the tame magazines should already have one. The situation is rather different though, they are nowhere, and there are two related reasons behind this.

• Meanwhile, our friends over at PS3 Portal have broken some news about the PS3's operating system, particularly the fact that it uses a ton of memory and processing power and runs constantly in the background of every game. Based on PS3 Portal's numbers, which it obtained from unnamed industry sources, the difference compared to the requirements to run Xbox 360's similar OS is quite dramatic and quite discouraging. Check out all the big numbers right here.

Shortage economics = bad news for you

We already know there's going to be a PS3 shortage when the system launches worldwide in November. Is there any answer?

FULL STORY:

Joystiq has posted an insightful -- and depressing -- conversation with a mom & pop gaming retailer on the economics of a console shortage. When the Xbox 360 was in extraordinarily scarce supply last holiday season, the store owner stopped selling 360s on his shelves, and put them all on eBay. He fetched double the retail value on all of those units, and apparently plans to do the same thing with the PlayStation 3.

We already know that the first month's worldwide shipment of PS3s will be about 1 million, which means the U.S. and Canada will probably get a little less than half of that (the rest will go to Japan and Europe). Although Sony's production plans put it a little bit ahead of the Xbox 360's disastrous launch shortage, there's still no question that there will be far too few PS3s for the first few months it's on the market.

So what do we do? Is there any way for consumers, retailers or manufacturers to solve this problem, or should we just accept it and get in line, like we do for a sold-out blockbuster film? During the Xbox shortage, one of our favorite online mags ran a series on Xbox economics (part 1, part 2), which started off with a premise we know all too well:

Yet, for economists, the Xbox 360 crisis is more alarming than a conspiracy, because these supply shortages make no economic sense whatsoever. Despite their suspicious regularity, the shortages benefit nobody.

The series offers up a few suggestions, like raising the retail price or selling the whole first shipment directly through auctions, so that Sony/Microsoft can pocket the difference, rather than giving it to guys like Joystiq's local game retailer. It also applies a nice quote from Napoleon on the whole conspiracy theory thing: "Never attribute to conspiracy that which can be explained by incompetence."

It's that incompetence that will prevent Sony from experimenting with our favorite shortage-busting plan: launch in the summer. Hardcore, early-adopting gamers obviously make up an important part of PS3 sales, but Best Buy is swamped because parents need a Christmas present, and a next-gen console is the coolest new thing.

If Sony could have actually achieved a spring or summer launch, as they had planned, they might have seen less of a rush from the holiday-shopping crowd. And although that wouldn't alleviate the lines at the store, it'd take away the "I didn't get what I wanted for Christmas" aspect of it all, which is the horror that causes grown men and women to get in fistfights over Tickle Me Elmos.

Launch it in June, and by the time the holidays roll around, there will be so many PS3s on shelves that every little kid in the world will be happy. And maybe we won't get extorted by store owners!

First Look: Ridge Racer 7 for the PS3

The game's producer shares more comments on Namco's PS3 debut title.

Famitsu may have gotten the big scoop on Ridge Racer 7, but now the game is making its way into all the other big magazines over in Japan. The latest coverage for Namco Bandai's PS3 debut comes from the monthly Hyper PlayStation magazine, which put the game on its cover and features a short interview with producer Hideo Teramoto.

The magazine first asked Teramoto to explain the differences between the XBox 360's Ridge Racer 6 and the PS3'd Ridge Racer 7. The development staff is for the most part the same for both games, Teramoto noted. "When actually getting our hands on the PS3 hardware," he explained, "as we gained a deeper understanding of what things we could realize, it was clear that we could appreciate something different from 6." It was with this realization that the team decided to make a new entry in the series.

Teramoto and crew believe that the Cell and RSX chips give them the chance to achieve a "Feeling of Ridge Racer" better than they were able to in Ridge Racer 6. This includes a "refreshing" sensation of speed.

Hi-Res Ridge Racer 7 Pics

The Ridge Racer franchise is on a roll lately. A Ridge Racer game on launch day is practically a tradition now and Namco doesn't intend to break the tradition with the Playstation 3. Coming around a year after RR6 landed on the Xbox 360, Ridge Racer 7 features even more beautiful graphics, a tweaked online mode, and, as one of the screens seems to suggest - an "Original Drift Handling" system. Perhaps Namco's up to something there?

Either way, take a gander at these beauts - 12 hi-res screens for your enjoyment!

While Bethesda has since denied that there are any plans to release the game on those formats, there is the possibility that they are saving up for an official announcement at E3. The PSP port, easily the most intriguing part of the rumor, raises questions on how the system would handle Oblivion's cutting-edge graphics and loading. It should be noted that there is a cell phone version of the game, though, and Bethesda may be seeking a similar route for any potential PSP release - a scaled-down/alternate Cyrodiil or perhaps a side-story of sorts.
