Ninja Gaiden Slicing Its Way To PS3

The swirling rumors regarding a Ninja Gaiden sequel for the PS3 have been clarified, and while it's not exactly what we expected, it's still intriguing.

According to the latest issue of Famitsu, Team Ninja announced that they will provide the PS3 with a "complete version" of Ninja Gaiden in the form of Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Even though it's not a sequel, the developers are changing just about every aspect of the original Xbox title: from overhauling the settings, character details and effects to real-time cinema scenes, Sigma should downright glitter.

Furthermore, there will be several gameplay enhancements as well. Fans of one of the greatest action titles in history can expect new moves, actions and weapons for the main character, thus granting the possibility of new combos. And perhaps best of all, Hayabusa's busty comrade, Racheal, will be playable, allowing the player to experience the story through her br-...er...eyes.

They estimate the game to be about 25% complete, but there is no Japanese release date as of yet.

TGS 2006: PS3 System Preview

In a special press event held outside the TGS grounds, SCEE Executive Vice President Phil Harrison previewed the PS3 Media Cross Bar and several other hardware features. Although it's still a "work in progress," PSP users will quickly recognize the interface: it's essentially identical in the PS3, featuring Profiles, Settings, Images, Music, Video, Games, Friends, and Web.

The system will hold several different user profiles, so in this way, it's similar to the Xbox 360's format. The settings bar is pretty self-explanatory; you'll find all the technical options and specifications in here. And speaking of settings, the demo was shown in glittering 1080p HD, and Harrison went through a series of examples using slideshows and photo animations.

There's a music visualizer in the cross bar, but beyond some colorful blobs of light, the preview didn't actually include music. They moved quickly along to the Games icon, which includes a network option to download any content available for the inserted game (nice!). Harrison made a point of saying this function would become "increasingly important" in regards to the download hub for the PSP. The Friends icon featured the expected friends list, data, and voice/video chat via either a letter pad or optional USB keyboard.

Harrison then provided viewers with a first look at the web browser, quickly bringing up the TGS home page and Google, and concluded by showing a brief early version of NBA '07. Thus far, it's one of the most in-depth Sony presentations at TGS, so it looks like they're finally heating up. Keep checking back for more updates.

GT 4 HD: Borderline Free?

According to Japan's Impress Watch gaming site, Gran Turismo 4 HD won't just be cheap; it might not cost more than a Starbucks cup of mocha java.

Series producer Kazunori Yamauchi released the information a little while ago, which essentially states that the game will be available for the price of the disc and instruction manual. This would translate to just a few American dollars.

As announced earlier, GT 4 HD will contain two modes of gameplay: Classic mode, which is the original GT 4 running in 1080p with a few other minor enhancements, and a focus on online play. We also found out there will be no cars or tracks available from the start; they must be purcahsed online for a small fee. The second mode is Premium, which is for those not quite so keen on the idea of online multiplayer. It offers a sneak peak at the GT 5 graphics engine and will also include 30 new cars and 2 new tracks. These, thankfully, are provided free of charge.

Sony has made it clear that the Premium mode will have available downloads, though. They will make 30 more cars and 2 more tracks for Premium, but as with the Classic mode, it's expected these will cost a few bucks apiece. Gran Turismo HD is reported to be 70% complete, and currently scheduled for a December Japanese release.

PS3 Japanese Price Drop: A Sign Of Weakness?

Mike Wallace, game industry analyst for USB Securities, produced a memo yesterday, and the subject content involved the price drop of the low-end PS3 in Japan.

He believes Sony made the move in response to consumer complaints about the console's high price, but ultimately called it a "questionable business decision and a sign of weakness" from Sony. Part of the memo reads-

"This price cut is only on the 20GB version of the PS3 in Japan, which in our view is not significant given that the U.S. is the key market for the PS3," Wallace said.

He also emphasized the fact that even with the new price, it's still more expensive than either the Xbox 360 or Wii, so he's clearly attempting to downplay the importance and impact of the price drop. To futher cement the point, Wallace reinforced what most industry professionals believe- that the 60GB PS3 is likely to be more popular in Japan, anyway.

Still, cheaper is cheaper. Japanese gamers may appreciate the savings, regardless.

Oblivion Coming To PS3 And PSP

UPDATE: According to recent information just announced today, Oblivion will be available for the PS3's launch (November 17)!

According to sources, an upcoming feature cover story in the next Official PlayStation Magazine has some big news.

One of the most impressive gaming achievements of the year, Bethesda Softworks' The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, is reported to be headed to the PS3 and PSP. Supposedly, the PS3 version will feature some all-new content unavailable in the PC and Xbox 360 versions. Among these additions is the inclusion of the Knights of the Nine, a new faction that gives players another option (the game currently features The Dark Brotherhood and The Fighters Guild). Expect the PS3 version to also boast new weapons, armor, items, characters, and even locations.

In regards to the PSP version, it appears Oblivion won't be a direct port, as one might expect. In fact, the game is rumored to be called The Elder Scrolls Travels: Oblivion, and will take place in a completely different environment. No further details were immediately available.

Rumors for both the PS3 and PSP versions began circulating back in April, and then sparked again in July when a product listing for a PS3 Oblivion popped up at GameStop. There are no official release dates or any other confirmed information at this time, but be on the lookout for that PSM article.

Sonic Nails Down Date And Price

Today, Sega of Japan announced full Japanese release details for the PS3 version of Sonic the Hedgehog, and they also took another step in clarifying the PS3 software price controversy.

The fleet-of-foot blue hero will blaze into stores on December 21, and will sport a retail price tag of 6,800 yen (just under 58 USD). This is actually a current generation amount; most PS2, Xbox, and GC games are assigned that price. Does this mean we can expect a $49.99 deal here in the U.S.? We should find out before too long, but PS3 owners should probably anticipate the normal - yet still not officially confirmed - $59.99 tag.

This information concerns only the PS3 version, as we still don't have a Japanese release date for the Xbox 360 Sonic.

At the same time, Sega further announced a price for Sega Golf Club, which is slated to ship for the PS3's launch on 11/11. The former arcade hit will also retail for 6,800 yen, which brings us even closer to securing and verifying the accepted $59.99 prediction.

The PS3 Future

In his keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Conference, Sony's Ken Kutaragi focused on the console's impact on the industry. Instead of trying to convince the world that the PS3 will still be relevant in the next generation of consoles by making major launch announcements, Kutaragi chose to further hype up the PS3 in much more general terms.

PS3 Games To Be $75 - $85

September 23, 2006 - Following up on Ken Kutaragi's pre-TGS keynote address, Japanese site Impress Watch has posted the latest in its "Random Tracking" editorial series. This periodic feature is written by Munechika Nishida, a well-known contributor to the Asahi Shimbun newspaper and Ultra One PC magazine, and this latest update has some surprising revelations on the PS3.

To most gamers, the most eye-catching part of the feature is a claim about game prices. Citing "multiple information sources," the article states that the price of PS3 games will be concentrated in the 8,800 to 9,800 yen range. The primary reason given is the rising cost of development.

In Japan, the standard price of a PS2 game is 6,800 yen, with only the biggest titles like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy rising to the 8,800 yen mark.

Fans say Playstation 3 lacks the 'wow' factor

For Sony, the 2006 Tokyo Game Show was a chance, after a series of embarrassing mistakes, to prove that PlayStation still deserves to dominate the video games market. But fans and analysts were united in the view that the PS3, despite the superiority of its technology, has failed to demonstrate its 'wow' factor.

THE Tokyo Game Show was the event that gaming fans had been waiting for: a chance, at last, to play the much-hyped ? and much delayed ? PlayStation 3.

For Sony, it was a chance, after a series of embarrassing mistakes, to prove that PlayStation still deserves to dominate the video games market.

What the machine actually delivered was a dazzling array of graphics. The dozen games on show yesterday have reached such sophistication that eyelashes, blades of grass and droplets of water can be animated individually.

But fans and analysts were united in the view that the PS3, despite the superiority of its technology, has failed to demonstrate its ?wow? factor.

PlayStation 3 To Play Oldies

The new PlayStation 3 console will be able to play existing Sony videogames downloaded over a network, Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi told an industry conference in Tokyo on Friday.

The new PlayStation 3 console will be able to play existing Sony videogames downloaded over a network, Sony Computer Entertainment President Ken Kutaragi told an industry conference in Tokyo on Friday. Users will have to pay a fee to get access to games from older PlayStation game consoles.

When the pricey consoles go on sale in Japan, there will be a bit of a break on the 20-gigabyte version, which will cost $430, or about 20% less than previously announced. The more expensive 60-gigabyte model will be priced at dealers? discretion and is not expected to be as popular as the cheaper version.

Sony doing all they can to sink the PS3

One more nail in the coffin of PS3: No games

Here?s the tally:

  • Launch delayed
  • $500 price point at launch (while Xbox 360s will likely be going for $350 by then)
  • 400,000 units for US Launch, 100,000 for Japanese launch due to difficulties in producing BluRay drives
  • BluRay games will load slower than HD-DVD (Source: A cross-platform game developer)
  • And perhaps worst of all, Sony can?t produce BluRay discs fast enough, so the launch titles will all have very low shipping volumes - even the top-tier licenses will only have 50,000 to 100,000 copies available this year. That?s right, even if you do want to spend $500 on the PS3, you may not be able to find games for it. When you consider that most of the sales for any console game happen within the first two months, any developer slated to release a PS3 launch title is in bad shape right now, and they?re certainly not happy with Sony. (Source: cross-platform game developer at an A-level publisher.)

Now, I do wish Sony the best, but I really don?t know how this launch could be shaping up to be any worse?

Sony's Keynote was a TRAINWRECK

This years keynote by sony at TGS was worse than e3's, so worse in fact, the developers began to pictochat during the keynote.

In responding to our live coverage of Ken Kutaragi's keynote at TGS earlier this morning, one Joystiq commenter wrote, "Gee, if this keynote was as boring being there as it was to read about, then Sony's in for a world of hurt."

We're here to tell you that it was worse. Way worse. You, dear reader, can dismiss the browser window containing that text with a click of your mouse, confident that nothing important was said. We, however, had to sit through the entire painful hour next to a European fellow who, if he ever owned any deodorant, had surely not used it in the last 48 hours.

PS3 launch to be bigger than Xbox 360's

David Karraker, Sony's senior director of corporate commmunications, announced that despite the recent cutbacks, the launch will still feature more PS3s than Microsoft's Xbox 360 launch. In a recent interview with IGN, Karraker addresses a comment made by Sony President Ken Katarugi that North America would only see about 400,000 units for the November launch.

"This is just below what we had available at launch for PS2 and is higher than what Microsoft had for Xbox 360. More importantly, in my mind, is that we will have 1 to 1.2 million units available by December 31 in North America."

If these numbers are correct and Sony holds true to Karraker's statements, the "1 to 1.2 million units" would outstrip the X360's sales mark in that time period. Microsoft claims to have sold around 325,000 units at launch and 900,000 units by the end of 2005, so if we see 400,000 PS3s at launch and over a million by the end of this year, that would top Microsoft's numbers.

More shipping info will likely surface as we get closer and closer to the official PS3 launch.

Ted Price: "Working hard to put in all the gravy"

Ted Price, Insomniac President and CEO, now has his own blog dedicated to updates on one of the PS3's most anticipated launch titles, Resistance: Fall of Man. First posted yesterday, Price addresses questions fans have had regarding why they chose the PS3 ("We chose the PS3 because we believe that it has the best long-term potential of any next gen platform"), the game engine, and how Insomniac will be compressing more than 20 GB of level data into one Blu-Ray disc.

He also clarifies an earlier quote that got a ton of attention online, where he said, "It would have been very, very difficult to create Resistance on any other platform." Apparently, we crazed deadline-minded reporters missed a couple key words in that statement, as Price's full quote reads, "It would have been very, very difficult to create Resistance as designed on any other platform." Price goes on to say, "You make your design choices based on what you have available and the PS3 and Xbox360 are very different machines with different strengths. We designed Resistance with the PS3?s strengths in mind."

More game news will follow on the blog, but for now, Price only says they're "working hard to put in all the gravy," and has some general positive notes regarding the current development of this revolutionary FPS. And finally, to appease the technical glitch-searching anal players, Price adds, "...we're testing the bejesus out of the game - for single-player, co-op, and multiplayer."

PSP Download System to Launch With PS3

E3-announced service to begin beside PNP

Everyone remembers Kaz Hirai's presentation at E3, where the proud papa presented a Ridge Racer PSP port like the second coming, Games Industry reports that the PSP download system will launch beside Sony's PlayStation Network Platform (PNP) this fall.

Sony's head of platform development in Japan Izumi Kawanishi indicated that in addition to working with the PS3 and PSP, Sony's download service would also work with Wi-Fi PCs. Considering how Sony's PSP is a convergence device, and Sony has positioned the PS3 as more than just a game console, it remains to be seen how their online platform will operate. Will it see an ideological similarity of being a convergence-type device? If the download system will be working beside Wi-Fi PCs, is it possible that other elements from routine PC use (web-browsing, for instance) will occur on Sony's PNP? Do gamers have an interest in browsing the Internet on a game console? How is that DS Opera browser working out for you, Nintendo?

PS3 Controller Named SIXAXIS?

They can't call it Dual Shock anymore, can they?

Sony's PS3 controller can't be called the Dual Shock 3 if it doesn't rumble, so what's the company to do? Rename their controller.

A 1UP user passed along the suggestion that we check the patent records for the name 'Sixaxis' and see what turned up. Scanning the trademark's text it's clear that this could be any number of things (see image above).

However, the term "six axis" has appeared frequently in Sony PR, including multiple times in the May 8, 2006 announcement of the controller's motion sensing functionality:
The controller for PS3 employs breakthrough technology of high-precision, highly sensitive six-axis sensing system that does not require any devices other than the controller itself for seamless interactive operation, thus eliminating additional settings to TVs. With this technology, ways to enjoy PS3 will be further enhanced by accessing PS3 through the network, while retaining the six-axis sensing capability.
So is this palindrome Sony's name for the PS3 controller? Representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment America told 1UP, "We haven't yet announced the name of the controller." But next week at TGS if you see Ken Kutaragi holding up a PS3 controller with a power point slide that reads "SIXAXIS" behind him, don't be surprised.

Sony's Answer to Xbox Live Revealed

Sony to use Xfire for PS3 online service?

Microsoft's Xbox Live has existed since 2002. How will Sony, who has never had a dedicated and successful online program in the console space -- the PS2's online was a total free for all -- compete with Microsoft's nearly four-year lead in the online console gaming service sphere?

They'll use Xfire, that's how (the image to the right is a mock-up).

By incorporating an existing service into their own PlayStation Network Platform (PNP), Sony hopes to circumvent existing problems in the console space that Microsoft has had to sort out and in using Xfire -- a company with an established messaging, matchmaking and gaming client -- Sony hopes to narrow the four-year gap in online gaming services that Microsoft currently enjoys (Xfire has been around since 2002).

Microsoft and Nintendo Comment on the PS3 Delay

With the news of the European PS3 launch delay, certain competitors might be eager to seize on the opportunity to push extra units over the holidays. Nintendo was rather subdued in its comments, while Microsoft was a bit more forthcoming, while industry analysts say the delay won't affect things too much, except for European stores who might be in a jam, and predict Nintendo might have the most to gain. Read more for details ...

Microsoft :

We know how challenging it is to pull off a global launch, particularly with unproven technology, so it's not surprising that Sony has backed away from their previously announced launch plans. Europe remains a priority for us and that is why gamers have been able to experience Xbox 360 from day 1 and why we're confident we're going to have a great holiday, regardless of what competitors are or are not in the market. Xbox 360 will have over 160 high-definition games including Viva PiƱata from Rare, Gears of War from Epic, Pro Evolution Soccer 6 from Konami and FIFA 2007 from EA, a robust and continuously growing online gaming community in Xbox Live, fantastic entertainment capabilities, optional HD-DVD movie playback capability and a great-value price.

Nintendo :

Wii is on track to ship in Q4, Nintendo plans to ship 6 million systems to retailers around the world between its launch in the fourth quarter of 2006 and the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2007.

Wedbush Morgan Securities' Michael Pachter responded to Next-Gen saying : "....not a big deal in the long run. The people who were going to buy PS3 and Wii will buy them both still, albeit in a different order. Few people were going to buy Xbox 360 and PS3 both, so there may be a small number of people who buy a 360 instead of a PS3. That number represents lost sales forever. The balance will be ultimately captured by Sony, and the launch delay will be a rounding error in the long run."

1Up spoke to Ben Bajarin, Creative Strategies; Michael Pachter, Wedbush Morgan Securities; and Mike Wolf, ABI Research

Wolf: "I'm sure they [Nintendo and Microsoft] are happy about it. The negativity towards the PS3 in the blogosphere... will help a bit. It's the second Christmas with a new generation of platforms, and Sony will not be there for some of those guys. If you have $600 in your pocket this Christmas, it'll be tempting to get the combo platter -- Xbox 360 and Wii."

No 1080p PS3 Games At Launch

Kikizo reports that, "unless you're using the PlayStation 3 mainly as a Blu-ray movie player, you're not going to be getting much 1080p content anyway."

The PlayStation 3 may be capable of 1080p, but there are no games that support it right now. The company also clarifies the importance of HDMI for its self-styled full HD.

Sony took flack in the press earlier this week when it emerged that the HDMI-equipped PlayStation 3 would ship without an HDMI cable. This would have potential consequences for Blu-ray movie playback, which the US PlayStation 3 site says requires an HDMI cable for 1080p. But Sony has today confirmed with Kikizo that this isn't necessarily so.

Both models of the PlayStation 3 will be able to play games and movies in 1080p, SCEE's Jonathan Fargher told Kikizo. Whether you're watching Resident Evil: Apocalypse or playing Gran Turismo HD, you'll be able to enjoy a full 1080p signal through component cables.

According to Sony, the official US PlayStation 3 site's caveat that the HDMI connection is required for 1080p signals in Blu-ray movies is fallout from uncertainty over the Image Constraint Token - a next-generation anti-piracy measure.

Kikizo reported earlier this year that Sony has seemingly neutered the ICT, allowing full HD signals to bypass the HDMI requirement.

As it turns out, though, unless you're using the PlayStation 3 mainly as a Blu-ray movie player, you're not going to be getting much 1080p content anyway.

Sony has made an issue of pointing out that 1080p, which the Xbox 360 is incapable of, is the Holy Grail of "full HD". As it stands now, the only game that is running in 1080p, said Fargher, is Gran Turismo HD - a tech demo crafted by Polyphony to showcase what the system is capable of.

Gran Turismo HD

This is in line with our earlier report, where a development source told Kikizo that, "even with [final hardware] in mind, reaching good frame rates at 1080p with next-gen graphics is almost impossible. Instead many developers, ourselves included, are reworking so they run at 720p. "

Whether you'll ever be able to buy Gran Turismo HD is up in the air. However, Sony did confirm that an announcement would be made at the Tokyo Game Show later this month.

If Gran Turismo HD is not released as a full game, it is possible that Sony could release it as a download through its PlayStation Network Platform.

With the PlayStation 3 a virtual no-show at Games Convention in Leipzig, all eyes are now on PlayStation boss Ken Kutaragi, who will deliver the keynote address at the Tokyo Game Show later this month. S3 Lowers launch numbers....AND sticks it to Japan!!!

Not only have they delayed the PS3's launch for the vast majority of the world, but look at these new numbers on how many PS3s will be available at launch date. North America: 400,000 Units, Japan: 100,000 Units!!

Even when Sony was claiming that there'd be 2 million PS3 consoles available at launch, we made a prediction: if you wanted a PS3 on launch day, you would need to pounce on the one guy in your city who managed to get one as he walked out of your local EB, crack his head against the pavement until he passed out, consume his heart for his strength, then fight off the rest of the gaming scavengers who had swooped down upon his corpse, eager to steal his shiny PS3.

Of course, that was before Sony announced that the PS3 would cost about $600. That price point definitely slimmed demand. Of course, we still stand by the prediction, because now Sony's backed down on their 2 million PS3s claim. Not only have they delayed the PS3's launch for the vast majority of the world, but look at these new numbers on how many PS3s will be available at launch date.

? North America: 400,000 Units
? Japan: 100,000 Units

Does that look like a lot to you? Keep in mind Microsoft's global launch was 1.5 million units, and there were still massive shortages.

You know, when I was at GC06 a couple weeks ago, I had a talk with one of the Microsoft guys about the PS3 launch. I noted that, after all of the screw-ups Microsoft made with the 360 launch, you'd really think Sony would have taken that as an object lesson on how not to handle a console launch, instead of doing everything in their power to fuck up the PS3 launch even worse. Microsoft guy's response? "Yeah. You would think that, wouldn't you?"

Remember Those Wii & PS3 Kiosks? Looks Like They Were Real

According to Nintendo blog, GoNintendo, the image of the Wii and PS3 demo booth/kiosk that recently did the web rounds has been confirmed as real from numerous sources in retail. The sources also say that Nintendo aim to install these in stores by the middle to the end of October.

This still hasn't been officially confirmed, but does seem likely that a similar looking design will hit stores in that period. Stick with C3 for updates.

GT creator: "PS3 is a weapon for revolution"

"For us, the PlayStation 3 is a weapon for revolution..." Mr Gran Turismo reckons that he's now finally happy with a videogame console in terms of physics modelling power. PS and PS2 couldn't manage the degree of simulation he wanted in his games, he tells us - but the PS3 will do "true" physics.

The latest PR missive from the Sony mothership in Tokyo comes this week in the form of a video interview with Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi, which is hosted on the firm's official PS3 "concept" website and explores the Polyphony Digital boss' great big love for the forthcoming console.

Okay, yes, it's quite clearly a carefully PR-managed piece of spin masquerading as a real interview, and it's universally positive and glowing in its praise for the PlayStation 3 (a bit like all the other PR-conducted interviews and, dare we say it, ostensibly "unofficial" but clearly corporate-approved insider blogs which have sprung up like a rash around the industry of late) - but buried in the marginally-more-tolerable-in-a-foreign-language hype are a few interesting titbits about Yamauchi's view on next-gen development.

For a start, Mr Gran Turismo reckons that he's now finally happy with a videogame console in terms of physics modelling power. PlayStation and PS2 couldn't manage the degree of simulation he wanted in his games, he tells us - but the PS3 will do "true" physics, which is presumably code for "good enough to look real".

PS3 will not ship with HDMI cables. Sold seperately

Sony has been touting the benefits of HDMI ever since the announcement of the PlayStation 3 at last year's E3, and the inclusion of an HDMI cable with every unit has been something which fans of both the console and HDMI have been hoping for. Fans often claimed that the inclusion of an HDMI cable would further acceptance of the standard while critics argued that it would be too expensive and would be better as an option.

Now, it has been revealed via the PlayStation 3's official site that the console will not be shipping with an HDMI cable. ?HDMI cable not included?, reads the site when answering the What is HDMI question.

However, the site is only the official site for the American region and the cables included in other regions may differ. At the moment, it is still unclear what cable the console will be shipping with, although the component cable seems like a likely choice.

The PlayStation 3 will be launching this November 11th in Japan and November 17th in other regions.
