CONFIRMED!: Rock Band $170 on Nov. 23 for Xbox and PS3

It's official folks, Rock Band will be $170 for Xbox 360 and PS3 and release Nov. 23. A Friday ... wait, Black Friday? Yes, more on that in a second. The PS2 version will release Dec. 10 for $160. Our spidey sense started tingling that something was up when we received info that Amazon was listing Rock Band for $169 -- a $30 reduction from the $199 they've had listed for months. Turns out that they received the official price today. The bundle includes the game (reg. $60, $50 on PS2), the guitar (reg. $60, but wired on Xbox 360, wireless is separate and $80), the wired drums (reg. $80), and wired microphone (reg. $30).

Now the big question: What were the powers that be thinking with November 23rd? Nov. 23rd is Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, the high holy "oh my gawd we're going to get trampled when the stores open" day of the year. Can you imagine what it's going to be like trying to pick up your game at retail on that day? Don't know about the rest of you, but if there were ever a time to get your game by mail -- this would be that time!

[Thanks to all those that sent info in]

Wal-Mart Canada Sale Hints at New 80GB PS3 Price

Wal-Mart Canada is giving the 80GB PlayStation 3 a $110 price break

A further price drop of the PlayStation 3, particularly related to the 80GB model is contested by few and backed up by analyst predictions. Although Sony’s true plans for the upper range price of its PlayStation 3 won’t be revealed until at least all 60GB models are sold out from store shelves, one of North America’s retailers could be providing a hint of what’s coming. Wal-Mart’s Anniversary Sale in Canada is pricing the 80GB PlayStation 3 at $549.83 CAD, which is the approximately same price that the 60GB model currently carries. A quick survey of Wal-Mart stores in west Canada found that most stores were sold out of the 60GB PS3 and only stocked the 80GB model. Major retailers have been known to put products at a certain sale price depending on what its forecasts are on pending changes in MSRP. Another factor that may play into Wal-Mart’s large discount on the 80GB PS3 is the growing strength of the Canadian dollar, which recently has been hovering on par with the U.S. dollar. Nevertheless, Wal-Mart’s Canadian price for the 80GB PS3 is still below that of the $599.99 MSRP in the U.S. Earlier this month, DailyTech reported that Sony is enlisting the help of Foxconn to manufacture low-cost PlayStation 3. Furthermore, rumors around the web figure that Sony will release another PS3 model aimed specifically at a lower price point. This supposedly low-cost PS3 is to have a 40GB hard drive, and could possibly include fewer I/O options. A recent Sony filing with the FCC has also unearthed further information on a new PS3 model.

Folding@home Petaflop Barrier Crossed (Update)

This post comes on the heels of my previous post, which talked about the crossing of the Petaflop barrier. The influx of gamers supporting this cause has grown so greatly that we’ve actually broken a second record within a week! This time the aggregated computation power of the PS3 consoles — by themselves — has crossed the Petaflop line!

As can be seen from the stats page over at Stanford, PS3 consoles are delivering 1020 TFLOPS (that’s over 1 Petaflop) from 41,145 participants.

I’d like to encourage people that really want to learn more about what Stanford’s doing with Folding@home to read the project director’s blog. He recently blogged about how processors such as the Cell/B.E. can produce that much work for the Folding@home project.

So, for all you Folders out there… how does it feel to be part of the most powerful distributed computer network in the world? :-)

FCC Filing Provides Peek at New PlayStation 3 Model

FCC documents show new Sony PS3 model on its way

With the slow but steady disappearance of the 60GB PlayStation 3 from store shelves, the effective entry-price for Sony’s newest console is once again $599 for the 80GB bundle. It’s unlikely that Sony will head into the holiday season at the same price point as it did last year, which is why industry analysts are predicting an upcoming price drop for the 80GB model.

Even at $499, the PlayStation 3 would still be priced well above its prime competitor – the Xbox 360 Premium at $349. Earlier this month, a report surfaced saying that Sony will introduce yet another PlayStation 3 iteration that could potentially occupy the $399 level.

The $399 model is speculated to come with a 40GB hard drive with no pack-in title. Sony would be expected to carry the 80GB model at $499 with MotorStorm or other title. Furthermore, Sony may sweeten the deal by bundling with either one or both SKUs with Spider-Man 3 on Blu-ray Disc.

PlayStation 3 Folding@home Reaches Petaflop Milestone

PlayStation 3 helps Folding@home with further disease research

Aside from powering some of this holiday season’s most impressive games and providing playback of high-definition movies, the Cell Broadband Engine is also exceptionally adept at medical and scientific applications requiring massive amounts of floating-point computational power.

Since joining Stanford University’s Folding@home program in March, the PlayStation 3 has led all processors in sheer productivity numbers. It should come as no surprise that Sony announced this week that PlayStation 3 consoles all over the world have helped the Folding@home project to reach a petaflop, a milestone never before reached on a distributed computing network.

Sony Makes Japanese PlayStation Store Accessible by PC

Don't have a PS3 but want to download games to your PSP? Sony solves that in Japan

Thanks to the PlayStation Store, gamers can connect their PSP to the PlayStation 3 console to download classic PSone games to play on the handheld. Those without a PS3, however, do not have access to such a feature – unless they live in Japan.

Sony announced at TGS that the PlayStation Store may now be accessed using a PC connected to the web. The announcement currently appears to apply only to the Japanese market, as North American and European gamers still must access the downloadable content via the PS3.

It is unclear when or if the PC-accessible service will venture outside of Japan, but Sony is likely working on ways to sell PSP owners worldwide downloadable content.

The ability to download classic games onto the PSP came in December 2006, less than a month following the PS3’s launch. For as low as $5.99, gamers can purchase PSone classics such as Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter and Tekken 2 to play on PSP.

In other PSP-related news, Sony announced new PSP Remote Play features, such as the ability to control the power state of the PS3.

PlayStation Home Delayed Until Spring 2008

PlayStation Home gets pushed back from October to unspecified time in spring

While the Sony-oriented keynote at the Tokyo Game Show held mostly positive words with the announcement of the DualShock 3 and new PSP Remote Play features, one piece of disappointment for those PS3 gamers wanting a different online experience is that PlayStation Home will be delayed until spring 2008.

Hirai apologized to the crowd for the delay and said the reason for the added wait is the makers of Home wanted more time to further develop the user interface.

The delay may not be a big surprise, as an anonymous report from a PlayStation Home beta tester indicated that several features were behind schedule. According to the report, published late August, none of the features promised during E3 were ready for the beta.

Rumble Returns to PlayStation 3 With DualShock 3

Sony announces at TGS a new PS3 controller, new PSP feature to turn off and on PS3

On the first morning of this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. President and COO Kazuo Hirai took the stage to deliver the event’s keynote address.

Perhaps the biggest news to gamers is the official return of force feedback to the classic PlayStation controller form. Dubbed the DualShock 3, the new PS3 controller adds vibration motors inside the shell – just as it is in the DualShock 2 for the PS2.

Hirai said during his speech that vibration was the single most popular request from PlayStation 3 users. Rather than mentioning the company’s previous legal position with Immersion, Hirai simply said that Sony had found a way to integrate rumble with SIXAXIS motion control – a feature that he said was not previously technically feasible.

The outward appearance of the controller is identical to the SIXAXIS, with the only hints of the added rumble feature being the new DualShock 3 logo and the additional weight. The omission of vibration motors in the SIXAXIS made the controller unsettlingly light, but in the DualShock 3, the added weight returns the controller to a more familiar feel.

Rumbling PlayStation 3 Controller Felt at EA Press Event

The long awaited return of rumble to PS3 leaked while playing Burnout Paradise

The form of the PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller is relatively unchanged since its first introduction with the original PSone era with the DualShock. However, different with the SIXAXIS is the omission of rumble force feedback and the addition of motion control.

While several Playstation 3 games have made strong use of the motion sensing, gamers are still clamoring for the force feedback that they’ve grown accustomed to since console generations ago.

Those inside the videogame industry are prediction that rumble will make an eventual reappearance on the PlayStation 3 – with the Tokyo Game Show being the ideal place to announce it – Sony’s press conference won’t take place until Thursday morning.

Sony Sources Foxconn to Help Manufacture PS3

As part of a continuing effort to reduce the cost and selling price of the PlayStation 3, Sony will tap an additional manufacturing partner to make the hardware of its latest console.

Sony recently enlisted the help of Hon Hai Precision Industry, perhaps better known as Foxconn, to produce lower-cost PlayStation 3 consoles, according to EMSNow.

Since the launch of the PlayStation 3 during November 2006, Sony relied on ASUSTek as the main manufacturer of its console hardware.

Sony Offering Free PS3 Or PSP With HDTV Purchase In EU

Apparently, Sony is offering a pretty sweet deal overseas, in Sweden at the very least. Anyone who purchases a full-HD TV from Sony, will get either a free Playstation 3 unit or a 200EU rebate on the TV. On top of that, with every HD Ready TV purchased, buyers will receive a free Sony PSP. NO word on if this deal is coming to the US, or what model PS3 or PSP is being given away. This should boost the PS3 numbers a ton, though. Click the link for the original advertisement image. Comment and let us know if there is more to translate!

Update: The ad says the deal runs from October 1 to November 31, 2007, so start saving up!
