Sony Comments on GameStop PS3 Shortage
On Monday we reported that GameStop and its EB Games branches would only be receiving enough PlayStation 3 consoles to fulfill 60 percent of their pre-orders when the system launches this Friday. A GameStop representative informed us that part of the reason for the shortage is that units originally slated for the US have been diverted to Japan to help fulfill the high demand there.
Today we received a comment from Sony regarding the shortage. The company's response was, "We have absolutely no knowledge of any units slated for the US being sent back to Japan to fulfill demand in that country." So who's to blame? Who will the people who pre-ordered a PS3 only to find that they won't be getting one after all hold responsible? We're not sure, but from the looks of things, GameStop's shortage isn't Sony's fault. Really, all some of us can do now is wait until the day comes when PS3s are readily available in stores everywhere or line up early for this Friday's launch.
