Sony's "Competitively Priced" Movies, TV Shows, & $399 80GB PS3

Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton announced yesterday that the PlayStation Store is now offering Movie and Television purchases and rentals at "competitive prices." So what's Sony's idea of "competitive pricing?" Let's find out!

If you turn on your sexy black machine, sign-in to the PlayStation Store, select the new "video" tab, scroll down to rentals, and select a movie to rent (not very streamlined, is it?) - there you'll see HD rentals cost $5.99, a dollar more than their competitor's prices, one being AppleTV. Why are the HD rentals costing more? I couldn't locate any details if the rental was broadcasted in 1080p, if the soundtrack was presented in actual surround sound, or if the viewing duration was longer than 24 hrs? If the rental cost more (than your competitors), but no information is provided why for these competitive prices, it's not "competitive."

Sony 40GB stock running low in anticipation of new 80GB model

A new PS3 SKU will go to sale in Europe on August 27th. Already, the effects of the newly announced 80GB Core model has been affecting the sales stream of the 40GB model. According to HMV's commercial manager for games, stock of the 40GB model is dwindling as retailers prepare for the newly upgraded model. For those interested in picking up a PS3, it appears waiting for the 80GB model next month would be the wise choice.

"40GB stock has been in very short supply over the last few weeks ... PlayStation 3 will now boast a monopoly on Blu-ray, increased storage space and Play TV in the near future," Jonathan Hayes noted. "All this points to a stronger proposition for Sony going into Christmas. The only disappointment was the lack of backward compatibility compared to the US version."

PS3 is well-positioned for the first time, says Signal Hill analyst

Signal Hill analyst Tom Greenwald commented positively on the pricing strategy of the PlayStation 3, according to Edge Online. He said that "Sony [is] well-positioned for first time since launch" thanks to the 80GB PS3 selling at $399 and "Sony's biggest announcement was a strong counter-punch to Microsoft's $50 price cut on the 360."

Greenwald also mentions what he feels is another advantage Sony holds over the competition: a strong game lineup. He also says that the $399 price point is a great advantage over the competition's similarly priced model, since it comes standard with so many more features. In the end, he's just one analyst -- your personal opinions are always the ones that count the most. Do you think he's got a point?

Resistance ARG expands: America First, America Only

It looks like the Resistance 2 ARG (alternate reality game) should be taken quite seriously. An email from getawarjob.com (attached, after the break) sends interested users to yet another site: America First, America Only. The site features some heavy conspiracy theories about the now-familiar "Project Abraham." Each article featured on this printing press can be enlarged, and will undoubtedly give hints to the next step of this massive ARG.

Kaz Hirai: replicating the PS2 numbers is 'not fun'

Kaz Hirai, the President and CEO of SCEI, told the Financial Times in an interview that some of his ardent goals for the PS3. "It's not fun for me replicating the PS2 numbers. I've seen that movie already, I want to try to see if we can exceed the PS2 numbers after nine years, otherwise why are we in this business?"

This echoes earlier comments made by David Reeves, President of SCEE. The PS1's lifetime sales were 102 million units, while PS2's lifetime sales are currently at about 140 million units. The PS3's lifetime sales 20 months into its life is about 13 million, and Sony expects to sell another 10 million units by the end of the current fiscal year.

So ... lofty goals or realistic expectations? Keep this in mind for comparison purposes: by March 2002, about 26 months after the Japanese launch and 19 months after the American launch, Sony shipped 30 million units of the PS2. Read the entire article here.
