NEW Metal Gear Solid 4 Trailers -- Just Released!

The MGS4 wrap party in Japan today wasn't just about motorbikes and posing for photos. It was about new commercials, too! Four new ones were shown off, one the main, badass theatrical trailer (featuring the MOVIE GUY), one featuring energy drinks, one featuring a mobile phone, and the other...a lady, her cat and a strangely dust-free PS3. Theatrical trailer's above, the other three, after the clicky-click.

Top 5 Non-Violent Things You Can Do in Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA 4
(All images courtesy of UGO.com)

For more than a decade, the Grand Theft Auto gaming series has been a lightning rod for controversy. But really, what else can you expect from a game that so shamelessly flaunts social mores? This is, after all, a video game where carjacking and murder aren’t merely a means to finishing missions and beating the game—you can get your kicks in with GTA’s massive extracurricular sandbox worlds, too. But there’s always been more ways to spend your gangsterific time than running from the police and beating up strangers. After hours upon hours testing the just-released Grand Theft Auto IV, we realized there’s actually so much fun in Liberty City that is—dare we say—wholesome that we opted to breakdown the positive pastimes of the badass game rather than review it. Leave that to the crooks. —Seth Porges

1. Listen to the Rockin’ Radio

GTA 4

Is that really Fela Kuti coming out through the digital dashboard? And Iggy Pop DJing? Woah. GTA: Vice City set the standard for in-game music (Rockstar Games even licensed a CD box set of soundtracks), but the new sequel takes the tunes to another level. You almost get the feeling that half the game’s $60 sticker price went to licensing some of these tracks. It is no exaggeration to say that this could be the best, most diverse video-game soundtrack of all time. And the talk radio’s pretty amusing, too—if you can concentrate on it long enough.

Top 10 most anticipated PS3 games of 2008 still to come

First of all, we didn’t collaborate on the game choices themselves (i.e., neither of us knew the content of the other’s lists before or during the article’s composition). IGN’s list of PS3 release dates served as our benchmark; for our lists, anything that had a date sometime in 2008 (including stuff like “Q4 2008” and “TBA 2008”) qualified. Also, this isn’t a list of PS3-exclusive games; we included multiplatform titles (after all, Fronz and Grim did). Finally, our lists do not include games that have already come out this year, such as GTA IV and echochrome.

Whew! That was a mouthful. Now that it’s out of the way, hit the jump for two top ten lists of 2008’s most anticipated PlayStation 3 games.

10) Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix (Q3 2008)

Ah, Street Fighter. The HD/2D update (with the extremely unwieldy title) to Capcom’s seminal arcade fighting series has sparked heated fanboy debates (though not as many as Street Fighter IV), been delayed a number of times, and gone far enough over budget to limit the game’s upcoming beta (buy Commando 3 on XBLA and get access) to Xbox Live. That said, I’m still just as excited for this as I was when I first heard about it, since Street Fighter II was one of my favorite games to play with my childhood friends. Also, it looks absolutely beautiful, as Capcom had UDON (the publishers of the Street Fighter comics) do all the art for it. I can’t wait to fire off some Yoga Flame in 1080p.

9) Fallout 3 (Q3 2008)

As someone who has never owned anything even remotely resembling a gaming PC, I’ve never played either of the prior two games in the Fallout series. But after reading the wonderfully in-depth previews that Nick and Tiff put up, and hearing about its insane amount of endings and sweet-looking Collector’s Edition, I’m on board with Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic, straight-out-of-2277 action RPG....

LittleBigPlanet Killzone

Just to show off how diverse LittleBigPlanet is, Sony created some Killzone puppets to show off in-game at their recent Gamer's Day in London. Pretty friggin amazing.

First Official Metal Gear Solid 4 Review

The first Metal Gear Solid 4 review is in! UK Official PlayStation Magazine has written up its thoughts and even put them on paper. And for those who care about things like numbers, the game gets a 10. From the review:

Every question posed and loose end dangled since Metal Gear first introduced stealth gaming to the world in 1987 finds closure here.... Even by the series stratospheric standards, MGS4 is a remarkable high point.... As a fan of the series I was expecting closure. What I wasn't expecting was the game's commitment to framing that closure with so many new ways to experience the series' 'evade or die' core values.

Hit the jump for another peek of the mag. The last line of the article posted after the jump *might* be considered a spoiler. So! If you are trying to stay spoiler-free, you might wanna avoid.

BioShock Confirmed for PS3

Rumor became fact today after the July issue of EGM confirmed BioShock was heading to the PlayStation 3.

I'm too much man for just one system

I'm too much man for just one system

The inevitable happened today as EGM has confirmed that the award-winning FPS BioShock is heading to the PlayStation 3.

The July issue (arriving on June 3), apparently dishes on how the Xbox 360's former exclusive is making the transition to Sony's console.

At the top of the list of improvements are "graphical" enhancements, but nothing more substantial than that is mentioned. The mag gives BioShock for the PS3 a "2008 holiday season" release date.

Forget September, Killzone 2 dated February 2009

killzone 2

Live from Sony's PlayStation Day 2008 in London, David Reeves has just announced Killzone 2 for February 2009, ending speculation that the game would arrive this fall. (See, Guerrilla said so.) The apocalyptic shooter will be playable later today at the event, so head over to PS3 Fanboy for the hands-on impression and further details.

We're contacting Sony to confirm whether the Feb. '09 date is just for the European release or a worldwide launch. Update: A Sony spokesperson told us they "haven't made any announcements for Killzone 2's release date in North America" but, perhaps sensing our disappointment, said they'll have "more news for [us] in the next couple of weeks." You'll know when we know, you know?

PlayStation Store Update: musical geography edition

Though it's another relatively quiet week for the PlayStation Store, there's music in the air. A boatload of tracks for Rock Band and some rare music album offerings make for a strangely musically-inclined update this week. Here's what we've got:

Games

  • PSP: The Con ($19.99): Previously released on UMD, The Con is a rough-and-tough fighting game that allows you to place bets and throw fights as you pursue financial glory.

Demos

  • PSP: Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee 2

Add-ons

  • PS3: Rock Band tracks ($1.99 per song): It's a European invasion this week with "Beetlebum" as performed by Blur, "Countdown to Insanity" by H-BlockX, "Hier Kommt Alex" by Die Toten Hosen, "Hysteria" by Muse, "Manu Chao" by Les Wampas, "Monsoon" by Tokio Hotel, "New Wave" by Pleymo, "Perfekte Welle" by Juli, and "Rock 'N' Roll Star" by Oasis joining the set list.
  • PS3: Rock Band discount tracks ($0.99 per song): Epic's "We Care A Lot" and Blink 182's "All The Small Things" are on sale this week.

Music

  • PS3: PixelJunk Monsters album ($2.99): 24 Japanese techno tracks from Otograph will have you dreaming of tower defense while you're on the move.
  • PSP: The Con tracks (free): Four tracks from the game's fight-inducing soundtrack.

Videos

  • PS3: Siren: Blood Curse debut trailer, GRiD trailer, First Sunday trailer, and more.
  • PSP: Siren: Blood Curse debut trailer, The Con trailer

Wallpapers and themes

  • PS3: Grafitti theme, High Velocity Bowling themes
  • PSP: The Con wallpaper

What a weird week: that's a ton of free and for-pay music to listen to. Be sure to check out the Siren: Blood Curse trailer in between all that rocking out: it's a sharp-looking PlayStation Network title that may turn some heads when it lands this summer. Plus, you'll need something to do while you wait for Metal Gear Solid 4 and mourn Haze.
