Only 20 PS3s Per Retail Store

GamesFirst reports that major retailers like EBGames and GameStop will only receive about 20 PlayStation 3 consoles per store, where they received between 50 and 100 Xbox360 consoles. As many recall, there were huge shortages on the Xbox360. The 20 consoles is based on an internal email from GameStop, and if true, could have serious consequences for Sony’s grand entrance into the next-gen battle. Sony said they would ship 4 million consoles this fall/winter, and 2 million by March 2007. But failing hardware might suggest otherwise.

Kutaragi Announces Plans To Confuse PS3 Gamers Even MoreThis is really Ashcraft's territory, as he can just flip his brain into reading those insect-l

This is really Ashcraft's territory, as he can just flip his brain into reading those insect-like Japanese cryptograms that so confound me, but he's not around. So I'm trusting the guys at Evil Avatar that this summary of a recent interview with Ken Kutaragi of Japan is more or less accurate. In the interview, Kutaragi said:
- games on PS3 are running on the PS3 with "basic configuration" - software will have different relationship with hardware (including non-gaming applications) in the future - software module will be made inside the PS3 (such as OS?) so PS3 will have no problem adopting new hardware parts (this doesn't mean you can upgrade but just different versions of PS3) - thus two models of PS3 are actually two different configurations, there might be other configurations in future, such as: enhanced version of CELL, more memory etc. The higher-end model of PS3 might be released in future.

Mind boggling. They are actually planning on techno-schisming the PS3's user base even more. The advantage of consoles over PCs from a development standpoint lies mainly in the fact that it's a stable platform with one real configuration. But Sony is basically approaching the PS3 like a computer... a move sure to frustrate developers as much as it confuses gamers.

PS3 too powerful?

Our girlish cousins over at Kotaku discovered that the majesty of the PS3 just cannot be contained within the tiny confines of its case. It seems that there are no PS3 beta units simply because there is no way to fit all of the powerful, expensive components inside a plastic box and that it will be downgraded considerably in order to ensure that it won’t burst into flames or become sentient when you plug it in.
Phantom Insider says: The current designs despite having vents all over the place apparently still cant dissipate the heat to sufficient levels Phantom Insider says: And yields on 3.2 Gigaherz CELL processors are too low Red says: they can’t produce them in mass supply still? Phantom Insider says: so the final release might run only at 2.8 gigaherz

PS3 controller used to rumble in 1999

No need for 360 fanboys to waste energy mocking the "revolutionary" PS3 controller for being sadly inferior to a 7 year-old product that worked with Warhawk on the PS1 when Playstation Magazine is producing humiliating videos like this. It turns out Pelican somehow got motion-sensing and rumble feedback to work on the same controller back in 1999. The first 30 seconds where he apes the Sony E3 keynote is classic stuff.

Playstation 3 Game Screenshots & Trailers

Virtua Tennis (PS3) Trailer

Sega's popular arcade-style tennis is headed to the PlayStation 3, and so far it's looking pretty sharp. Sadly, the horrible rock music that has plagued the series since its inception sounds like it's back in full force.

Announcer Kevin Harlan talks about his role in NBA 2K7 for the PlayStation 3. There's not a ton of game footage in this trailer, but what is shown looks incredible.

PlayStation 3 Supporting HDMI 1.3

Today, the seven HDMI founder companies, of which Sony is one, released the HDMI 1.3 specification. HDMI is the standard interface for high-definition digital electronics.

HDMI 1.3 more than doubles the interface's bandwidth and adds support for "Deep Color" technology and new digital audio formats. These enhancements will allow devices that support HDMI 1.3 to push more pixels and more colors than those that don't.

In tandem with the announcement, Sony also revealed that the PlayStation 3 will support the HDMI 1.3 standard.

"PlayStation 3 will be the most advanced computer platform for enjoying a wide range of entertainment content, including the latest games and HD movies, in the home," said Ken Kutaragi, president and group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. "By introducing the next-generation HDMI 1.3 technology, PS3 will push the boundaries of audiovisual quality to the next level."

Three ways to pass time while waiting for the PlayStation 3

So what if six months and $500 separate you from a PlayStation 3 (scheduled to arrive in stores on November 17)? There's plenty of exciting and affordable video game action to keep you busy until then.

Improve your brain age. More popular overseas than it is in the States, the hand-held Nintendo DS ($130) is quite possibly the most innovative video game console ever. Two bright displays, touch-screen capability, and a built-in microphone combine to deliver compelling game-play unlike anything else. You can train a Nintendog to obey your spoken commands or sharpen up your mental skills with the company's excellent Brain Age puzzle game. And forthcoming games demoed at the Electronic Entertainment Expo convention this month—including a new game in the Mario Brothers franchise—show that the DS is just hitting its sweet spot. Another bonus: Nintendo is releasing the DS Lite (also $130), a version of the device slimmed down by about a third, on June 11.

Pick up that second system. Just before the gaming expo this month, Sony announced it was cutting the price of the PS2 to $130. With used PS2s and Xboxes readily available and affordably priced at secondhand games stores, this summer is great opportunity to catch up on those games you had to pass up before because they weren't available for your system. Test-drive the Gran Turismo, or battle it out in God of War for the PS2. Or blast your way through the Halo titles for Xbox.

Take a vacation to Persia. By all accounts, the one standout title for the PlayStation 3 shown at the E3 gathering earlier this month was Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed. Set during the Crusades circa A.D. 1191, the game mixes stealthy maneuvering with quick attacks in a richly detailed setting. That same mix can be found in the company's Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones game released earlier this year. Sharpen up your skills on that title, and you'll be ready to dip into Assassin's Creed in November.

"The Playstation 3 Is a Computer"

Phil Harrison is Sony's head game designer. In an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE, he talks about accusations that Sony copied Nintendo's new motion-sensitive controller, why Blu-ray needs no copy protection, and what Playstation 3 has to do with MySpace.

( Phil Harrison - the guy in the right picture - is Sony's head of game development, presiding over the Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. He's been working for the Japanese game console manufacturer since 1992 and is considered one of the prime advocates of the Playstation brand in Europe )

SPIEGEL ONLINE: How do you respond to people who say you stole Nintendo's idea for a motion-sensitive controller?

Phil Harrison: On one level I understand why people say that. But it's a little stupid, if you don't mind me saying so. When we launched Playstation in 1994 we introduced the concept of real-time computer-generated 3-D-graphics for the first time. That was the innovation that drove the platform. When Nintendo released the N64 in 1996 and they had real-time CG 3-D-graphics, did you hear us say, "Nintendo, you've stolen our idea?" Of course not. These innovations are things that become possible because of a combination of technology, price and manufacturing capability.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But it is a bit striking that two consoles with motion-sensitive controllers are hitting the market at the same time.

Harrison: We have been working on these innovations ourselves for a long time, and clearly Nintendo has been working on similar -- although not identical -- innovations for a long time, and that's natural. That's what technology is about. However, the difference between our strategy and everybody else's is that our controller, the Playstation dual analog controller, is the de facto industry standard controller in video gaming. I reckon, including the third party controllers that have been sold that are the same shape as this, nearly 400 million have been sold worldwide. This means that we have the standard for human machine interface for gaming in this controller. What we have done is to add an additional dynamic to this controller; namely freedom of movement.

How the PS3 got to be $600

Kutaragi's desire to stratify the console market with Cell technology in effect wed Sony to the unpalatable prospect of charging an unprecedented price. Coupled with Sony's desire to control that medium with their proprietary Blu-ray format, the final price was escalated by two very advanced (and very expensive) pieces of Sony technology.

PS3 Could Allow Users to Install OS X

Sony has determined to make its upcoming PlayStation 3 more programmer-friendly than previous iterations of the videogame console, even going so far as enabling users to install Mac OS X or Windows on it. According to Neoseeker, the PS3's hard drive will ship with a flavor of the Linux OS already installed.

Sony has also said that it wants to "follow Apple's suit," which reporter J. Micah Grunert believed means that the company wants to employ open standards in an effort to make developers more receptive to the console. While specifics aren't available yet, Mr. Grunert noted "the PS3 won't be just another set-top box."

Sony's PS3 Gamble: Should Blu-Ray Have Been Optional?

The 2005-2006 edition of the "console wars" is a little different from previous installments in the battle to be in everyone's TV room. There are the usual skirmishes over horsepower, cost, and developer support—as there is any time a new console hits the scene. This time, however, the gaming side of the equation has been made more complex by the choice of supported physical formats, and now with pricing announced for the two "high-end" consoles, we can consider how the next-generation optical format disc wars have factored into the strategies employed by Microsoft and Sony. In what follows, I consider and argue that Sony's decision to include Blu-ray in the PlayStation 3 represents an unnecessary risk, and could end up hurting the company's efforts to combat gains by Microsoft.
