How will Microsoft respond to Playstation Home?

Home is highly anticipated throughout the PlayStation community. Many are saying that this is going to change the way we socialise on our consoles, and we here at That Gaming Site agree, well just myself and Ankido. Mehar our Xbox reporter and founder of the site, has different opinions, which will be expressed a bit later on. We also have Chris Rah Osiris from PlayStation LifeStyle sharing his views with us, making this a special article and hopefully the first of many for the two sites.

Innovation seems to be a huge part of the Sony label. They keep bringing new creations and ideas to the table all the time. We’ve heard and seen the likes of Eye Pet’s, MAG, little Big Planet and the big Sony project, they called Home.

Like I said before. Home is highly anticipated by many and is set to deliver a whole new console experience.

So with all this hype and excitement surrounding Home, Microsoft must be slightly worried? Or so we would all assume right?

What “Game Plan” does Microsoft have to tackle the long awaited release of Home? Is it the new Dash Board and avatars? We will start with my opinions on this.

Week recap: PS3 80GB; Xbox 360 plummet; Wii fall

Sales for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 fell this week in the latest Japan retail figures. The hardware ranked No. 4 in overall sales.

Amazon.com this week price cut the Dualshock 3 controller to under $50. The Dualshock 3 includes rumble functionality not found in the Sixaxis controller.

Sony this week said it will blast Savage Moon to the Playstation Network. The action strategy title will be a download exclusive.

PS3 titles ranked in the top 10 following a discount at Amazon. Discounted titles included Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Orders for Sony's PS3 Wireless Keypad spiked upon availability at retail. The Wireless Keypad will be sold in Nov in the U.S.

Sony this week released a new Warhawk expansion called Operation Fallen Star. The title includes a brand new level and 10 new layouts.

PlayStation 3 Around the Web: What We Read

In just a few short hours, PAX 2008 will be but a distant, awesome memory. Next week, we’ll be posting the interviews we shot (featuring the questions you asked) with Insomniac, Sucker Punch, and Hothead Games. We’ll also shed a little more light on the gameplay of Resistance Retribution for PSP, and recap today’s Blog Reader Meet-up (spoiler: it was awesome).

PAX isn’t really a “news generator” in the way E3 and Leipzig were, but if you read anything you’d like to share with the class, link out below.

In the meantime, I hope you have a good, relaxing Labor Day (if applicable). See you Tuesday.

Warhawk Operation: Fallen Star

So I’ve been dropping hints for a few months now on the blog and finally, at Leipzig Games Conference this week, we unveiled our third expansion for the Warhawk Universe — Operation: Fallen Star.

The sweet, sweet hotness that is the Icarus Mk.1 Rocket pack and once you’ve played it, you wonder how you ever played Warhawk without it!

Normally we announce stuff here in the States but we thought since Warhawk has a global player base, lets show it at Leipzig first this time.

Warhawk Operation: Fallen Star Details

Warhawk players have been looking forward to each expansion pack with enthusiasm, looking for new ways to blast their opponents into dust. Their wait is almost over, as the Operation: Fallen Star expansion pack will be released this Thursday on the PSN. On the PlayStation.Blog, Dylan Jobe, Game Director of Warhawk, released details on the upcoming pack which will be released in two days. The first major announcement is the inclusion of a new map known as Tau Crater, which takes place on a forested island that has a number of vertical areas, such as tree branches, cranes and the wreckage of a capital ship. Players can scale the ship in a number of ways, including using the new jetpack that's included. In fact, Jobe mentioned that while the map layout for Tau Crater is large and contains ten separate arrangements, the development team added 30 bonus layouts in the original maps that allow for jetpack functionality.

Jobe also mentioned that the Jetpacks can be used with the new game modes included within the 1.4 update, Hero and Collector, to add to the experience. Jetpacks aren't simply default items; players have to run up to a machine known as a Daedalus Rapid Assembly Device, or a D-RAD. By hitting the Square button, the Daedalus starts making the jetpack for a player to use, which will take some time, controlling the number of flying soldiers providing death from above. In fact, he mentioned this very tactic, holding L2 to hover at the current altitude you're at so you can fire at enemies. R2 is thrust, but can also be used as a dodge boost tactic to escape in any direction you face.

The hottest girl of GC 2008 is... the Cooler Master girl

MaXconsole writes: "Ever since E3 fell to pieces, the Games Convention has offered an improving gaming spectacle for the gaming public. The Games Convention also has the added bonus of booth babes being allowed, and this years convention played host to a whole variety of super hot babes promoting various gaming gear. But none were hotter than the following...the Cooler Master girl and as some attendees put it "This one is TOTALLY HOT. Every chick just fight for attention here, and she just stayed and more than 10 photographers at once makes mass photos." So congrats to you Miss Cooler Master for winning our award of being the hottest booth babe at GC 2008!"

Hoping and Fearing for LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet faces a big challenge with its eventual October release. For an original IP, the cute little platformer-that-can has generated more hype in gaming circles than even Spore. All game developers would want that hype to generate sales and excitement for their game, but too much hype can cause serious fallout among gamers after the actual release. Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Metal Gear Solid 4 were mostly all hailed with incredible excitement in previews, and near-perfect scores in reviews, but the games can never live up to their hype with some irritable gamers. Certain blogs serve as record for this strange phenomenon: The Brainy Gamer blog was bursting with excitement for Metal Gear Solid 4 before and slightly after the game's actual release, but the posts became more and more negative as time went on. Surely, no one could realistically argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 was not one of the top five games of 2008, but the hype eventually gnaws at some gamers, telling them that this great game still isn't quite good enough. LittleBigPlanet is unfortunately likely to face the same odd criticism, based on its potential to completely revolutionize gaming.

5 Reasons Not to Get Excited About Heavy Rain (Yet)

Is it just us, or is the incredible amount of hype for Heavy Rain a little bit puzzling? Sony clearly believes in the project, having allegedly cancelled some other very high-profile projects (The Getaway, 8 Days) to devote more attention to this game. What is it that the company sees in this title? Ever since its announcement at E3 2006, we have been fed a series of trailers that look intriguing, but don’t really tell us much about the nuts and bolts of the mysterious project. Of course, all of this might change as we get closer to the game’s release and we get a chance to learn more about the exciting new features that it brings to the table. In the meantime, here are 5 reasons that we are holding back excitement for Heavy Rain.

1. QuickTime Events

For a game that is meant to “redefine cinematic realtime entertainment” in this console generation, Heavy Rain is making use of some decidedly last-gen gameplay ideas. In the only actual gameplay footage we have seen so far, the action appears to play out through a series of quicktime events, in which players must tap the appropriate button at the appropriate time to get the heroine to do something important (like stay alive). We have been saying this for years, but it bears repeating: There is absolutely no way to make quicktime button pressing fun. Stop making these kinds of games, please, thank you.

Sony's Big Week: Life With PlayStation, Home Beta, Warhawk

This week should definitely be called “Sony’s Promise Week”. Sony has promised us Home Extended Beta by the end of August, but not only that they have also promised us Life With PlayStation also at the end of August. Free Playstation Home Update

Home. We've been waiting for it for quite some time now and some gamers were beginning to think it would never arrive at all. But here at the German Games Convention, Home did in fact make an appearance at the top of a stylish, multi-tiered patio structure built into Sony's booth. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Martijn Van der Meulen, a Producer on Home, to talk about what's going on with the free software that promises to revolutionize the way PS3 owners interact with one another online.

First and foremost, Van der Meulen told me (without hesitation) that it is a 100 percent guarantee that Home will be released by the end of this calendar year. He has absolutely no doubt that this will be the case, so it looks like the long wait to come Home is finally reaching its conclusion. Van der Meulen also assured me, quite adamantly, that Home will always be a free service -- only premium content will need to be purchased. I know some gamers were concerned that once Home reached a certain user base, a fee might be applied to the service, but this is not the case. Van der Meulen says that there are no plans to charge for Home, even in the far future.

PS3 Keypad a Gimmick?

Sony recently announced their answer to the 360’s messenger pad but where Microsoft got it so right, Sony seem to have got it so wrong.

The simple fact of having the Chatpad on top instead of below defeats the whole point of the idea. I bet Sony are kicking themselves after not including an input on the bottom of the SIXAXIS/DuelShock controller.

The reason why the 360’s Chatpad works so well is because it is placed directly by your thumbs meaning all you have to do is move your thumbs off the Analog Sticks and onto the pad; as if you were texting.

The PS3 version requires you to move your entire hand position if the images are in fact the final product which is going to seriously hinder the keypads fluid integration with gaming and messaging.

Whilst the mouse input seems like a good idea, it is essentially a gimmick. How will you be able to use it? You will be typing and holding the Controller which cannot be placed on a surface as it isn’t flat.

Preview: Killzone 2 Online Multiplayer Dazzles & Bots Confirmed

It's been a long wait, but I finally had the chance to engage in Killzone 2's much-anticipated online multiplayer at the Leipzig Games Convention in Germany. Teased at E3 in Los Angeles last month, I have been practically foaming at the mouth to give it a go. Here's how it went down.

I was lucky enough to be in the first session at the show, meaning that aside from internal testing, I was first outside of Guerrilla Games' development studio to play multiplayer. Prior to playing, our group of about 8 journalists received some prep, outlining many of the online features that we'd get our hands on.

Essentially, it was the same presentation that I saw during E3, with one addition--bots. Eric Boltjes, senior online designer, confirmed that A.I. bots will be available to add in both online and offline games, and that they will excellently mimic human behavior and use all special abilities just as a normal player would. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see them in action today, but I did get to face off against some of the development team back in Amsterdam who were ready to make mince meet out of my inexperienced hide.

No PS3 Price Cut, Sony Says...but a Free PS3 is possible!

Following rumors of a looming Xbox 360 price drop, Sony says those hoping for a PlayStation 3 drop at next week's Games Convention in Germany "will be disappointed."

"It's not going to happen," a SCEA spokesman told Reuters on Friday. "If you're coming for that you'll be disappointed."

Earlier this month, a proven confidant said Microsoft would drop the price of the Xbox 360 in September, from US$279 to $199 for the Arcade model, and $349 to $299 for the Pro model with hard drive. Microsoft has declined comment on the rumor.

Both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 saw their first price drops in late 2007. As consumers continue to gobble up the industry-leading Wii for $250 a pop (or more if resold), many gamers wonder when Sony and Microsoft will respond with a more enticing mainstream price.

The Leipzig Games Convention runs from August 20-22.

PS3 Finally Hacked! PlayStation 3 backups running

Dutch blog PS3 Sense reports that hackers have succeeded in loading backup games (view here) in the PlayStation 3, following an almost forgotten feat that was once promulgated by self-proclaimed hackers of Team ICE.

While German hacker and Team ICE member StreetSkaterFU demonstrated via video (view here - requires Apple Quicktime Software) how the feat was accomplished, in a surprising turn of events, PSP homebrew sceners Alek and Mathieulh confirmed that the exploit was actually doable and real.

A full video in Apple Movie format was released demonstrating how StreetSkaterFU was able to get Warhawk to run without the Blu-ray Disc. Despite the quality and size of the video, the developer claims that this demonstration is not fake. Take note, however, that both StreetSkaterFU and Alek say that this is just a proof of concept for the moment.

Moderator FreePlay of the QJ.NET Forums says that the exploit is actual pretty simple. But according to FreePlay, the exploit is only doable if you have a second hard drive handy and have a good sense of timing.

Discussions are currently going on at the forums, but the mechanics of the exploit or its processes have not been revealed. Stay tuned for more updates.

Cheaper Sony PlayStation 3 Arrives in US Next Month

It was bound to happen: the 40GB PlayStation 3 previously announced for Japan and Europe will arrive in the US in November 2 with a $400 price tag. The 80GB model will get a price cut too, going from $600 to $500. Both versions are still more expensive than its Microsoft and Nintendo rivals. [WSJ]

PlayStation 3 Triple Betas Explained

If you have been playing on your PS3 non-stop for the last couple of days, chances are you have one (or more) of the following betas: Resistance 2 Closed Beta (for now,) PlayStation Home Closed/Opened Beta, or SOCOM (the game not the gun or the US Special Operations Command) Confrontation beta - which you shouldn’t have because it isn’t even out yet.

Although, people can pull the strangest things off their sleeves, so who knows. If you are in one of those betas, consider yourself special; lets exclude PlayStation Home since there isn’t anything special about it. It still looks the same. Just more people in the same boring place. (Do your duty as a tester and find some glitches though!)

If you are not on one of the betas and you are still playing your PS3 non-stop, you most likely have trophy fever. How about putting your desires of leveling up your PSN Level down for a bit, and educate yourself in how to get on these betas before its too late.

Anyways, Sony has or will be having three very important betas at the exact same time; which causes some problems since usually we aren’t accepted in all of them if we are already in one of them. (PSU rules I think - not so sure.) So, lets get on with that educational speech I promised you…

Final Fantasy XIII demo to be over 90 minutes long

The latest issue of Famitsu PS3 is all about the recent Square Enix DKΣ3713 event, and FinalFantasyXIII.net has a few juicy scans from the magazine. One of the more interesting things to point about the upcoming FFXIII demo bundled with Advent Children Complete: the demo will be on a separate Blu-ray disc (meaning it will unlikely be region locked), and the amount of gameplay is promised to be longer than the length of Advent Children. That means the FFXIII demo should be at least 90 minutes long, if not longer. That's huge! The demo will supposedly come from the very beginning of the game, so players won't have to worry about spoiling the later parts of the game.

Rumor: Playstation Home Expanded Beta Release Date

*Please take this with a grain of salt. This has not been 100% confirmed, we are going to keep it as a rumor*

As you probably already know, there will be a Home expanded beta opening it’s doors to a group of lucky PS3 owners by the end of the summer. While European Playstation owners have received confirmation E-mails as well as previous Home beta testers, the rest of us are stuck wondering when we will receive our shot to expierence the revolutionary social gaming application. Well, I think I may have the answer you looking for.

Today at 7:50 PM (EST) I dialed the number for SCEA Consumer Support. I was greeted by a woman named Betty. I asked Betty “When is the Home expanded beta going to be released?”. Silence struck my ear for two or three seconds. Then Betty exclaimed, “August 26!”. Could this be true? I pinched myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming (don’t worry I wasn’t). I asked Betty the question again and she replied with the same answer. Suddenly, Betty said something suspicious. She said “Oops!”. As I thought in my head what she meant by oops, I started to get nervous. Betty went on to tell me that she wasn’t suppose to tell me that the beta was to come out on August 26th.

After hanging up with Betty I called SCEA several more times. The majority of the representives didn’t even answer my question. In fact they danced around it like it was prom night. At last! Someone actualy gave me a decent answer. A Sony Rep. named Darien said that I can expect the Home expanded beta very soon. He went on to tell me that you can let four other people on your PSN and download the Home Beta Client like you can with games. I cannot confirm this right now but I should have a definitive answer by Saturday night.

I guess we can only wait until August 26th to see if Betty was right. Until then this is TheRookie45 signing out.

Angry gamer asks Sony to define what a 'valued' gamer is?

Sony recently sent out e-mails which stated "We’ve chosen to offer access to Home to a select number of PLAYSTATION 3 owners, and as a valued member of PLAYSTATION Network, you have been selected."

However, one gamer is pretty angry that he wasn't selected as he has spent over $2000 on games and many hours online, but it seems far less loyal PS3 fans have been selected and speculates that he wasn't selected purely because he never purchased MGS4!

To quote: Now SCEE define valued please because looking at the forums and other news sites it seems people who have signed up to the PSN in 2008 and have less than 5 posts in the forums seem to have had more success than the likes of the owners who have had membership since late 2006 and spend more than a £1000 on PSN and BD games (not forgetting the BD films), lets not forget the amount of time these people spend online with their purchases.

Lets also remember that feature on the playstation website were you can add what hardware and software you own (of which I keep up to date religiously). It seems that feature is also worthless and pretty pointless.

So what did get you into the HOME Beta this month? I spoke to a friend at SONY in London and he told me that most people who bought MGS4 are the chosen ones. I can counter that claim tho so it may not be 100% true, but as I have spent over £1000 on PS3 titles and spent hours online the only game I did not purchase was MGS4, maybe it is true.

Thief says Free PS3 needed to stop hostage situation

There are stories about stolen PS3s ... and then there's this story. A man who stole a PS3 system from a St. Louis EB Games store at gunpoint told the clerk that he needed the system to "save his family." According to KSDK, the theif told the clerk that "his family was being held hostage" and only the PS3 would save them.

The police arrived shortly after the incident, but the thief had already vanished. Was he a real victim of a hostage situation -- or was he a thief that just wanted to tell an interesting story? Until the police find him, we'll never really know.

Resistance 2, Hold On To Those Resistance Saves

While I didn’t attend E3 – I was hanging out in Kotaku Tower with Luke working the night shift – I did get to see the presentation of Resistance 2 just like everyone else. But since I didn’t get to see the game in person, I had to make due by viewing screenshots and somewhat muddy-looking movies on my computer. At the time, I wasn’t too impressed with the game from a graphical standpoint. I mean, it looked great, but after sitting down on a nice couch in front of a big-ass TV, I can say with confidence that, yes, Resistance 2 does look amazing.

Insomiac’s James Stevenson gave me a run-through of the Resistance 2 demo from E3.

I wasn’t surprised when I first saw the leviathan trouncing its way through the flooded streets of Chicago like I was during E3. I knew he was coming. But I was able to see just how much detail is actually on the leviathan model itself and how much intricate detail was going on in the animations on its face. They’ll be focusing more on larger bosses this time around, Stevenson told me, so I expect to see many more “wow” moments like this

I was told there would also be a lot more effects added to the final game, too. This will be most noticeable during the sequence where Nathan is running up the stairs in the building with the leviathan peering in at him. All the while the building will be on fire and smoke will be billowing about.

GTA IV Coming to PC with Extra Content

In news that we all knew was coming, Rockstar officially admitted today that their console hit GTA IV will be coming to the PC this September.

Moreover, the PC version will include numerous enhancements, as well as the inevitable boost in resolution and draw distance found in previous console to PC conversions. Gamers lucky enough to own a PC with the necessary specs will also be able to enjoy all-new multiplayer game modes and user-created mods. Here is what Rockstar CEO Sam Houser had to say about the game, rubbing salt in the wound of console gamers everywhere:

“We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV. The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can’t wait for people to play it.”

Call of Duty 6 Announced...Already??

Jeux-Video.com - The fifth entry in the series Call of Duty, called World at War, is not even out that the sixth is already announced. This is Robert "Bobby" Kotick, the boss of Activision, which released the information during a conference call, referring to an exit in 2009 and development back at Infinity Ward . We know already that it would be held in the near future. Finally, this announcement is not surprising when one knows that CoD 4: Modern Warfare is the game's best-selling 2007.

Warhawk Update to Feature Offline Modes

When I read this on Kotaku one bit jumped out at me that I think needs some exploration. You see, the piece gives some details about the 1.5 patch for Warhawk. They mention something’s that are obvious, like trophies and custom soundtracks and some fun things like, new paint and insignia schemes. Here’s what I like, the brief mention of offline tutorials. I want to know how robust this new offline mode is. Are talking a few quick challenges? How about the ability to play against bots? Remember Bots?

There was once a time when all multiplayer games let you play alone with bots. It was great for learning maps and how to use weapons. This way when you went online you didn’t play like an idiot when you hit a new map for the first time. These days games are too cool, or developers are too lazy to add bots to their games, so they are a thing of the past. I don’t know what the new mode in Warhawk is, but at least I won’t have to wait too long to find out. Update 1.5 is set to come out this month.
