Anygame's Big Time Revenge

New PS3 game in the works, but we don't know squat about it.

Upstart Korean developer "Anygame Company" has revealed through job postings that it is currently recruiting staff for at least one upcoming PS3 and Xbox 360 project in its Los Angeles offices. The developer is also looking for animators and game designers to help complete the project and is also searching for a Special Effects Supervisor to head a PS2 / PS3 project known as Big Time Revenge. Whether or not Big Time Revenge and the aforementioned 360 / PS3 title are one in the same is still unclear.

No details about Big Time Revenge are currently known, other than the fact that it's an action / adventure title and that it isn't entirely platform-exclusive.

More as it develops.

Can The Xbox 360 Out Sell The PlayStation 3?

The European regional vice president at Microsoft Xbox. But he would say that, wouldn’t he? And Sony’s PlayStation 2 passed the 100m sales mark last November, whereas Microsoft has shifted a comparatively paltry 24 million Xboxes. So is he just being optimistic?
The difference is that Microsoft now has the jump on Sony. When the PlayStation 3 launches in November (in theory), the Xbox 360 will already have been on sale for a full year. "Is it PlayStation or DelayStation?" taunts Lewis, who is also scornful of Sony’s insistence on using the PlayStation 3 to get its Blu-ray high-definition DVD standard into people’s houses.

"Blu-ray is untried, untested, not established," he says. "I think there is a very strong risk in terms of the consumer having to pay for something that may never make real ongoing sense. Right now, HD-DVD [which, uncoincidentally, Microsoft backs] is far more established and we’ll offer a peripheral which you’ll hear a bit more about at E3 [the big videogames show in LA in a month’s time]."

To beat Sony’s eager hordes, the Xbox 360 will need a huge installed base. Steve Ballmer, head of Microsoft, says history shows that in console generation wars, the first to sell 10m wins that round (http://tinyurl.com/pggkf). Lewis will say only that by June, between 4.5m and 5.5m will have been shipped worldwide and there will be 80 Xbox 360 games on sale worldwide. That may be conservative, as the production bottlenecks that led to retail shortages at the launch seem to have been overcome.

But will the Xbox 360 have what it has so far lacked - a new "killer" game to motivate gamers to buy the hardware? Lewis suggests that Epic’s Gears of War "will be amazing. It will be in some ways a defining title in the way Splinter Cell and Halo were for Xbox. And the Halo franchise remains important to what we do." Which implicitly confirms rumours that Halo 3 won’t ship until next year.

The State of the PS3 6 Months Out

theInquirer have been looking at the state of the PS3 with it being around only 6 months left until the November launch. At this stage most of the debugging should have been completed and prototypes, and also especially development kits, should be available. The problem is, none of this is happening and theInquirer put it down to 2 reasons:

1. The current PS3’s are too big, by around 50%, to fit in the empty boxes that we have seen. This is solvable because electronics always get smaller, but 6 months out from launch it is a bit of an issue to say the least.

2. Sony is still bidding on components for the PS3 - how can debugging and serious testing occur if the development is not final?

While Sony have committed themselves to a launch this year, as the time nears things will certainly get interesting, let’s just hope that members of the Sony PS3 team aren’t overly susceptible to high levels of stress.

PS3 and Xbox 360 OS Usage

PS3Portal have written an article on the differences between the operating systems in the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Specifically, they discuss the amount of console power that the O/S takes up in each of the consoles. This is especially important in this generation because on the 360 you will note that the O/S is constantly running in the background and it is expected the same will occur in the PS3.

They claim that the O/S on the Xbox 360 uses 32mb of the 512mb available RAM, and also 3% of the CPU time on Core 1 and Core 2.

“Everything that one wants to do involving software on a game console, specifically while the user is playing games, comes at a cost. In the case of the Xbox 360, this cost is approximately 2% of total CPU time and 6.25% of the Xbox 360’s total available RAM. Balancing these out, one could argue that MS has removed a total of 4% of the Xbox 360’s total available system power in order to provide these features and more which were not mentioned. They also left room, CPU and RAM wise, for future features. In other words, they are not entirely using all of the CPU Time and RAM that they have reserved to date.

They also have information on the PS3 O/S running costs, which are 32mb of the 256mb available GDDR3 memory on the RSX chip, 64mb of the 256mb available XDR memory off the Cell CPU, and 1 SPE (Synergistic Processing Elements) of the 7 available is constantly taken, with another available if needed.

“In the case of the PS3 this equates to 25% of the available cores on the CPU and 18.75% of the available RAM in the system. Balancing these out, one could argue that Sony has removed a total of 23% of the available system power in the PS3 for these features as well as others that are not mentioned here or will be added in future updates to the PS3 Operation System.

PS3 Portal don’t claim to have the technical knowledge to properly decode their figures, and neither do we! Interesting nonetheless.

PS3 at E3: Not so much?

Rumor has it that playable PS3 kiosks will be in limited supply at the biggest gaming expo of the year.

FULL STORY:

In news that matters way more for members of the media than for the average gamer, Spong has been reporting that numerous sources say that Sony will have very few playable PS3's on the floor for the Electronic Entertainment Expo, leading to long lines and perhaps scores of disappointed nerds. We would let this slide, but coupled with the whole booth babe elimination thing, it's pure blasphemy!

Sony insists that everything is cool. Here's what they have to say:

"We are expecting big queues to see the PlayStation 3 and so will be taking great care to manage the crowds in the best way possible. All press will certainly have no problems seeing everything we are showing. This year is going to be huge for us. Not just in terms of what we're showing, but in the major announcements we have planned."

God, we love it when people say "queue." See ya in line!

The Big E3 List: 2006 Edition

Every official game at the show, all in one handy guide.

In preparation for the event we industry types like to call "The Show" (and to let you know that we care -- and we really do... the flowers are on the way, we promise), we've put together a big fattie list of all the "official" titles being shown at E3 in Los Angeles from May 10-12.

BUT WAIT! Before you write in with such enlightening observations as "u f3rg0t triPl3 so=0p3r sup3r bLu3 p0k3m0N!11!!!!1!!1!," you should realize that this list doesn't necessarily represent everything that a particular company will be showing at E3, just what they've confirmed with us so far. There are sure to be plenty of surprise titles on the floor that publishers aren't ready to make public until closer to the opening of the show. Luckily we'll be updating this list every single day with any new confirmed titles that we learn of, so all you'll have to do is check back here for the most up-to-date list of E3 titles.

For your easy navigation, we've provided links to every game listed below should you want to use our watch-list system to keep and eye on your favorite titles, and we've also included a handy countdown clock so you know exactly how much time is left before the show happens.

Oh, and before we forget. If you're a publisher and want us to display your games on this list, send us a complete description to This email address and we'll take care of the rest.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas Screenshots for the PS3

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas is the fifth title in the Rainbow Six series, and pits players against terrorists who have taken the city of Vegas hostage.

Although the new initially broke on Friday at 1up.com, today Ubisoft formally announced Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas is currently in development at their Montreal studio and scheduled to ship this Fall on all current and next-gen consoles, presumably including Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Little is know at this time other than Vegas is being held hostage by terrorists and the agme will "push the envelope of technology through graphics, artificial intelligence, physics and animations created by Ubisoft." The full scoop is being saved for the April issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly, available on newsstands March 14, 2006. We're hoping screenshots will become available on or around that date and when they do, we'll have them here.

Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft adds, "Rainbow Six is back and better than ever. Building upon the online success of the Rainbow Six franchise and harnessing the power of the next-generation experience, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas will be the benchmark against which all next-generation games will be measured. With Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter being released this month to wide critical acclaim, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent also due out this year, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas makes it a perfect trifecta for the Clancy series in 2006."

Sony: PS3 Won't Cost $600-$750

Georges Fornay, posing next to a PlayStation 2 box.

Company claims that executive's comments were "misunderstood."

Sony stated today that comments regarding the price of the PlayStation 3 made by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) executive Georges Fornay on French radio were "misinterpreted", according to a report at gamesindustry.biz.

Nick Sharples, SCEE corporate communications director, told the industry website that the notion that Fornay's mention of a price range of €499 to €599 for the next-generation console was a "mistranslation or misunderstanding of the discussion, which was actually focused on the relative value of PS3 as a Blu-ray Disc player."

According to Sharples, the pricing discussion on French radio station Europe 1 was intended to focus on the fact that the PlayStation 3 would be priced "very competitively" when compared to other products that would use the Blu-ray optical technology if it were to be priced at €500, but that this price point would put it "well above the range of other game console products."

Sharples claimed that Fornay was explaining that with both Blu-ray and high-definition functionality, the PS3 would be "cheap" relative to other products that have these features but more expensive when compared to other "current" game consoles which retail at "far below €500."

Sharples stated that any reports that suggest Fornway was providing a specific price point or price range for the PS3 were completely "incorrect."

PS3 European pricing not what it seems

With the recent slip-up by a Sony Europe VP regarding the PS3's European pricing, Americans have been exposed to one of the most annoying aspects of being a European gamer (when we're not waiting ages for games to arrive): unfair console and video game prices. Naturally a lot of American readers will be angry when they convert Mr. Fornay's £499 and £599 price range to dollars; $613 to $736 is a lot of dough when compared to the console's main competitor.

Fortunately for U.S. gamers (and unluckily for Europeans), no console manufacturer ever bases the price of its consoles on the currency exchange rates. The chances are that the US dollar figure of the PS3 will be equal to or lower than the euro numbers, not in line with the currency exchange rate. Don't believe us? Check out the Xbox 360's European pricing. For some reason the Xbox 360 price in U.S. dollars is identical to the price in euros -- working out to a €60 or €80 premium depending on which console you purchase.

Based on the example of the Xbox 360 it follows that if the European pricing outlined by Mr. Fornay is real, then the American pricing for the PS3 will be between $499 and $599 and not the crazy numbers that you get after converting the currency. Crappy for European gamers, we know, but at least the American PS3 Fanboys will stop crying!

Playstation 3 Price Leaked

PlayStation VP sez PS3 will cost between 499 and 599 euro

In a radio interview with Générations Europe 1 yesterday, George Fornay -- president of Sony Computer Entertainment France and vice president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe -- let a little something slip: the PlayStation 3 will cost between £499 and £599. That's somewhere between $613 to $736 in American dollars! He was sure to point out that while this might sound like a lot of money for a game system, it was in fact cheap for a Blu-ray compatible playback system. Yay?

Since I can't seem to get the radio stream to work (and don't understand French if I could) Update: The radio stream has started cooperating, though the French thing is still in the way. If you speak Francais, you can jump to the 8-minute mark for the scoop. The news comes to us (via Google's translation services) from Play France. Now, this could be a language barrier problem, but the untranslated page still reads "entre 499 euros et 599 euros donc."

Sony already told us it was going to be expensive and we already know the parts ain't cheap, so either Mr. Fornay is trying to set up an unrealistic price expectation -- only to have it shattered when the PS3 price is revealed to be $7.50 -- or he broke the first (and second) rules of the Sony executive's PS3 club: don't talk about the PS3. This thing is going to cost that much just like the PSP was gonna cost $500.

SN's PS3 Tuner

What the heck does that mean, you say?

April 3, 2006 - Development tool production house (and Sony Computer Entertainment subsidiary) SN Systems announced over the weekend that it has launched a brand new Tuner for registered PS3 software developers. Obtainable in a free evaluation version, the new Tuner is a profiling tool that allows developers to locate bottlenecks and conflicts in source code quickly -- helping them to improve overall code performance.

"Tuner has already been a major product, both on the PlayStation 2 and PSP, so it was a natural progression to develop it for PlayStation 3," commented Andy Beveridge, Co-founder and Director of SN Systems. "This latest version has been tailored to the PlayStation 3's threaded architecture which will really help developers take advantage of the new hardware. It's another key tool in SN Systems' range of products that developers can depend on as they gear up for the release of their game titles."

What does this mean for you the consumer? Well, in a roundabout way it means that the code used to program all your favorite games should be cleaner, thereby giving them better system performance.

WWE Smackdown vs RAW Series Coming to PS3

Sequel to THQ's million-selling franchise confirmed; Multiplatform release on PS3, Xbox 360 a reality. First screens and info inside!

March 30, 2006 - It's WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, Illinois this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, the folks from Yuke's, THQ, and WWE are going to make a special announcement tomorrow evening. To be revealed at the annual Superstar Challenge prior to this weekend's festivities (which includes the WWE Hall of Fame induction ceremony and WrestleMania itself), the announcement will officially confirm the next iteration of the WWE videogame family, WWE SmackDown vs. RAW 2007.

In addition to confirmation that the game is coming to stores later this year, the most interesting piece of information actually relates to the systems on which the game is coming out -- which embrace PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions besides the expected PS2 and PSP SKUs.

This move not only marks the first time in the franchise's history that a SmackDown title will appear on two system generations at once, but also, the first time that the game will be headed to a platform other than one created by Sony.

Final PS3 controller, launch line-up at E3 - Harrison

The PlayStation 3's final controller design and the console's line-up of launch software will be unveiled at E3, Sony Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison said yesterday.

Speaking at a press luncheon, Harrison also said that Blu-ray disc "will be the primary distribution method for the triple-A games that you will see on the PS3," but that the "eventual shift" to digital distribution would be at a pace set by the consumer.

Sony wants to deliver episodic content - "whether it's game, music, television - or perhaps some combination of those" - through downloads for PS3, Harrison said, as part of a move to "push beyond the traditional gameplay we see in retail".

GDC: PS3 goes online and real-time

At GDC in San Jose today, Sony Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison outlined plans for a versatile online gaming service with considerable potential for digital distribution of content, and demonstrated real-time game demos for PlayStation 3.

Production of PS3 hardware will ramp up at a faster speed than either of Sony's previous two home console formats, Harrison said, ahead of the worldwide November launch announced by Sony boss Ken Kutaragi in Tokyo last week - a worldwide launch that includes Australia and areas of Asia outside Japan, Harrison pointedly noted.

GDC: PlayStation 3 keynote text commentary

Sony Worldwide Studios head Phil Harrison is currently delivering his Game Developers Conference keynote, entitled "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box", revealing more of Sony's plans for PlayStation 3, which is due to launch worldwide in November.

We understand he began by making a reference to digital distribution, so there should be more on that soon. He started by, in the words of our correspondent, "banging on about PlayStation 2" - and David Jaffe joined him on stage to talk about God of War 2 (we've heard of it...) and show off a video. It's going to be playable at E3, and will be one of the games that ensures people play PS2 for ages after PS3 is out, says Harrison.

PS3 to go on show at GDC

As the Game Developers Conference gets underway in San Francisco, Sony has confirmed that the PS3 will go on show at this year's event - but whether visitors will actually get to see it running games is another question.

In a statement, Sony said that there will be "PlayStation 3 kiosks, showcasing the latest hardware and development tools for the next-generation console, including Unreal Engine, COLLADA, PlayStation Graphics Library (PSGL) and performance analysis tools."

Sony unveils online PS3 plans

Further details of the PlayStation Network Platform announced by SCE boss Ken Kutaragi in Tokyo yesterday have emerged, including the fact that the ability to play games online will be included in the basic free service.

Additional information about the service has emerged as the slides used by Kutaragi in his presentation have been posted online, bringing with them a host of details of exactly what will be included in Sony's online offering.

As reported yesterday, the PlayStation Network Platform will have a basic free service which will be available to all purchasers of the PS3 from the day of launch in November, and which will be co-created by Sony Online Entertainment (creators of the Station.com system used by games such as Everquest, Planetside and Star Wars Galaxies) and GameSpy.

The free service will support a host of communication and community features, including voice and video chat, messaging, unique user IDs and handles, and matchmaking, ranking and data upload and download service for games.

Crucially, the basic service will allow users to play games online - a factor which sets it apart from Microsoft's equivalent free service, Xbox Live Silver, which enables community features and content purchases, but doesn't allow users to play multiplayer online games.

Sony's system will be handing off significantly more control to game publishers, who will be able to run their own game servers as they see fit. Although Sony will be creating a standard infrastructure for the service, with data centres in Asia, North America and Europe, the system will still run over the conventional Internet and publishers will be able to connect their own servers to it.

UL: Dark Kingdom PS3 Screens

As I'm sure that most of you noticed, Sony Computer Entertainment - though open about its PlayStation 3 and PSP at last night's conference - refrained from mentioning much of its PS3 software. However, the company recently revealed several images of the action/RPG Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom for the next-generation unit.

The Untold Legends series began as a launch title for the PlayStation Portable, while its sequel released for the PSP just this month. This PS3 UL game is being developed by Sony Online Entertainment and will be published by Activision - though a specific date has not been given (however, if it is a launch title then we should see it in early November). Dark Kingdom is also expected to feature online multiplayer gameplay, but again we've no specifics yet. Enjoy the screenshots below.

Hard Drive to be Bundled With PS3

After the announcement last week that the PlayStation 3 will be shipped in November, Sony announced that a hard drive would be needed for the console. The problem was that there was no word whether the hard drive would be bundled in the package or would be a necessary separate purchase upon release.

Next-Gen.biz has confirmed that the PlayStation 3 will ship with a hard drive and there will be no separate package like how the Xbox 360 is sold. "We didn't confirm it, but it was confirmed at the media briefing by Ken Kutaragi. It's a fully upgradeable, 60 gig hard drive that will come pre-packaged with the system," said a spokesperson at Sony to Next-Gen.biz.

We'll keep you posted with further information on the PlayStation 3 as it comes about.
