GTA IV Coming to PC with Extra Content

In news that we all knew was coming, Rockstar officially admitted today that their console hit GTA IV will be coming to the PC this September.

Moreover, the PC version will include numerous enhancements, as well as the inevitable boost in resolution and draw distance found in previous console to PC conversions. Gamers lucky enough to own a PC with the necessary specs will also be able to enjoy all-new multiplayer game modes and user-created mods. Here is what Rockstar CEO Sam Houser had to say about the game, rubbing salt in the wound of console gamers everywhere:

“We are very excited to be releasing the PC version of Grand Theft Auto IV. The whole team is dedicated to bringing an amazing gaming experience to the PC. The game looks and plays beautifully on PC and we can’t wait for people to play it.”

Neither can we, Sam. Be sure and register your thoughts about this news in our PC game forums. Does the move from console to PC diminish the experience, or are you happy to have another opportunity to explore Liberty City from the perspective of Nico and friends?

Playstation 3 sees sales jump

'Grand Theft Auto' sales hit 8.5 million units

"Grand Theft Auto IV" and Nintendo were kings of the videogame kingdom again in May, but Sony surprised the biz by landing in second place for the month in console sales.

Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 209,000 units domestically in May, according to the NPD Group. That's well ahead of Microsoft's Xbox 360, which has generally been a solid No. 2 behind Nintendo's Wii.

Earlier in the year, the PS3 briefly outsold Xbox 360, but Microsoft blamed that on supply constraints following the holidays. In May there were no supply issues, nor were there any big PS3-exclusive games. A combination of last year's price cuts, the built-in Blu-ray player and a growing library of games appear to be giving Sony an advantage over its competitor.

However, neither console got much of a sales boost out of the release of "Grand Theft Auto IV," as they had been hoping. PS3's 209,000 units sold is up moderately from April and down from March, while Xbox 360 sales fell for the second month in a row to 187,000 units.

Meanwhile, Nintendo Wii sales also slipped, though the lower-priced console was still a dominant No. 1 at 675,000 units.

"Grand Theft Auto IV" took the Nos. 1 and 4 game sales spots for its 360 and PS3 versions, respectively. Game sold 1.3 million units in April and has sold a total of 4.2 million, according to NPD. Publisher Take-Two Interactive recently said the game has sold 8.5 million units worldwide.

Nintendo's "Mario Kart Wii" was No. 2 for the second month in a row, selling 788,000 units and bringing its total to almost 2 million.

"Wii Fit," the new exercise game from Nintendo, had a very strong debut despite its high $90 price and unique balance board peripheral. Game sold 688,000 units in its first month, landing it at No. 3.

The only other new game to hit the top 10 was Sega's adaptation of "Iron Man." PlayStation 2 version sold a decent 131,000 units.

Several other high-profile new games didn't manage to sell the minimum of 102,000 units to break into NPD's top 10 for May, including Electronic Arts' "Boom Blox," developed with Steven Spielberg, and Disney Interactive's "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian."

Top 5 Non-Violent Things You Can Do in Grand Theft Auto IV

GTA 4
(All images courtesy of UGO.com)

For more than a decade, the Grand Theft Auto gaming series has been a lightning rod for controversy. But really, what else can you expect from a game that so shamelessly flaunts social mores? This is, after all, a video game where carjacking and murder aren’t merely a means to finishing missions and beating the game—you can get your kicks in with GTA’s massive extracurricular sandbox worlds, too. But there’s always been more ways to spend your gangsterific time than running from the police and beating up strangers. After hours upon hours testing the just-released Grand Theft Auto IV, we realized there’s actually so much fun in Liberty City that is—dare we say—wholesome that we opted to breakdown the positive pastimes of the badass game rather than review it. Leave that to the crooks. —Seth Porges

1. Listen to the Rockin’ Radio

GTA 4

Is that really Fela Kuti coming out through the digital dashboard? And Iggy Pop DJing? Woah. GTA: Vice City set the standard for in-game music (Rockstar Games even licensed a CD box set of soundtracks), but the new sequel takes the tunes to another level. You almost get the feeling that half the game’s $60 sticker price went to licensing some of these tracks. It is no exaggeration to say that this could be the best, most diverse video-game soundtrack of all time. And the talk radio’s pretty amusing, too—if you can concentrate on it long enough.

PS3 and 360 Versions of GTA IV Are Identical

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Twins
Can you tell the 360 and PS3 versions of GTAIV apart?

You may recall Jeronimo Barrera, Vice President of Product Development at Rockstar, saying:

“It’s really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to [the delay].”

Although, with the extra development time granted between the October 2007 release date and the recently announced April 29th, 2008 ship date, it appears that they have really pulled it together, and now go as far as to say that both versions are identical (sans the 360 exclusive DLC).

“Now, we’re neck and neck. That’s not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account.” said by Barrera.

He further clarified that PS3 owners out there, all 9.43 million, can rest easy knowing that you’re not going to be receiving a crippled version of their favorite game from last-gen.
