Sony Preparing "About 40" Games For PS3 Network

When it comes to online services for consoles, Xbox Live has thus far been the class of the field. There have been plenty of issues regarding the new service from Microsoft, but overall, the competition from Sony was never stiff enough with the PS2. This time around, however, Sony plans to rise to the occasion.

Sony President of Worldwide Studios Phil Harrison stated that one of the first steps is to solidify some games for the PS3 Network. The Xbox Live Arcade has been quite successful since its inception, and Microsoft's X06 show last month unveiled plenty of upcoming Arcade titles. Well, Harrison says they're funneling money to develop "about 40 games" for the PS3 Network to provide some of that previously missing "stiff competition."

Based on his comments, it sounds like he's referring to 40 original titles, rather than 40 PS1 games that will eventually become playable on the PS3. It also doesn't seem like he's referring to potential third-party titles for the Network (like Konami, who has produced several Live Arcade titles already). No, "funneling money into 40 games" sounds like...well, 40 new games.

At the same time, Harrison has criticized the old-school - and thus, old-fashioned - 2D games on Live Arcade. He's not interested in keeping the games "old-school," evidently, but he is interested in "pushing the 3D capabilities of the PS3.

Lastly, the Sony pres was quick to point out one big difference between the PS3 and Xbox 360 that greatly impacts online Arcade titles: the hard drive is bundled in every PS3, which means developers aren't restricted by the 50MB file limitation that XBL Arcade titles are forced to abide by. Of course, this being said, Microsoft just might find a way to break that rule to keep pace...

Either way, Sony is clearly taking the PS3 Network very seriously, and don't intend to simply let Microsoft run
