Sony "Overreaches" With Blu-Ray, But Remains Stoic

Clearly, it's that fancy Blu-Ray technology that's causing the biggest problem when it comes to the PS3's production issues. Even though they've had a year since the launch of the Xbox 360, Sony has still had difficulty producing enough diodes that ultimately delay drive production. But while Sony certainly isn't denying this, president of Sony's worldwide studios, Phil Harrison, has something else to add-

"Yes, we have overreached in production of the Blu-Ray component -- I can't deny that. But that's the price you pay for adopting brand new, leading-edge technologies that will be future proof. We will resolve those issues -- we are already catching up," said Harrison. "We will continue to catch up on the production, and as you know, we haven't changed our full-year forecast of six million units, so we're only talking about a ramp-up issue."

Of course, this doesn't exactly help all those would-be consumers who wanted a PS3 for the holiday season, but perhaps the bigger issue revolves around Sony's goal of shipping 6 million units by the end of the year. Whether that happens or not will have a large impact on the success of both the PS3 and Blu-Ray.

And according to 1Up, Sony has officially replied to Harrison's comments; or rather, expanded on them a bit:

"The PS3 is packed with advanced technologies, such as the Blu-ray Disc player, that have never been produced at such quantities. There is a learning curve here to consider. If we would have just made a gradual bump in our offering to PS2.5 it would have been easy to put millions on store shelves at day one, but then we would have disappointed our consumers who know Sony for developing systems that stand the test of time. Six years into the PS2 and it still has beaten the Xbox 360 in sales over the last several months.

So was Blu-Ray the right move? Only time will tell.
