Hoping and Fearing for LittleBigPlanet

LittleBigPlanet faces a big challenge with its eventual October release. For an original IP, the cute little platformer-that-can has generated more hype in gaming circles than even Spore. All game developers would want that hype to generate sales and excitement for their game, but too much hype can cause serious fallout among gamers after the actual release. Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Metal Gear Solid 4 were mostly all hailed with incredible excitement in previews, and near-perfect scores in reviews, but the games can never live up to their hype with some irritable gamers. Certain blogs serve as record for this strange phenomenon: The Brainy Gamer blog was bursting with excitement for Metal Gear Solid 4 before and slightly after the game's actual release, but the posts became more and more negative as time went on. Surely, no one could realistically argue that Metal Gear Solid 4 was not one of the top five games of 2008, but the hype eventually gnaws at some gamers, telling them that this great game still isn't quite good enough. LittleBigPlanet is unfortunately likely to face the same odd criticism, based on its potential to completely revolutionize gaming.
