Nvidia: PS3 Delay Was "Master Stroke"

PS3 delay actually genius?

While many insiders are down on PS3 at the moment, Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang is not one of them. In an interview with Dean Takahashi he let it be known that Sony's delay of PlayStation 3 was a "master stroke".

"It makes no sense for the PlayStation 3 to use DVDs. To postpone it by a few months so they could include Blu-ray was a master stroke. When that comes out, it's going to look so much more advanced than last-generation game consoles. I think that was a wonderful call on their part."

Also, he confessed that Microsoft's Xbox 360 was too expensive for Nvidia.

"We could not afford to build the graphics for the 360. Our most important asset is our people. If we use our people on a project where the economic return is not good enough, and there are other projects we could be working on, then we're going to lose money. We were a lot smaller company than ATI at the time. Maybe ATI could afford it and we couldn't. I know I couldn't afford it. I would love to build it. I just can't afford it."

WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 Cancelled for PS3

Like it or not, wrestling games are big sellers, and with the power of the PlayStation 3 behind it, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 was poised to be a huge game for THQ this holiday season. I saw "was poised" because 1up.com has confirmed that development of the title for the PS3 has been discontinued.

In a statement to 1up,a THQ representative stated "Consistent with our goal of delivering the highest quality content across all next-gen platforms, we have decided to postpone the debut of the Smackdown series on PlayStation 3 until the holiday 2007 timeframe."

The game is still in the works for the PlayStation 2, PSP, and Xbox 360.

Oblivion PS3 Bound?

Could the Xbox 360 megahit Oblivion be headed to the PlayStation 3? No official announcement has yet been made, but in the time honored tradition of retailers spilling the beans on unannounced titles, Gamestop may have jumped the gun.

The company has a page up for the game, an expected release date on November 6th, and a retail price of $59.99. Until Bethesda officially announces the game, it's still possible the game won't see the light of day on the PS3, but this is a good sign that it probably will happen.

Cipher Complex Announced for PS3

Development house, Edge of Reality, announced Cipher Complex today, though progress seems to be in the preliminary phase. Only a few pieces of concept art come along with the announcement; little detail otherwise. What can be gleaned from these pictures are things we've come to expect from the genre - lots of sneaking around in the inky shadows and slicing guards throats from behind. It's safe to say we'll find plenty of stealth and action in Edge of Reality's first original game. Cipher Complex is slated for both the Xbox 360 and PS3. Hopefully we'll learn more soon.

Sony Doesn't Know What The PS3 Is

Sony is ripe with development and marketing problems surrounding the PS3. Not the least of which is that "Within Sony, the different divisions have discordant views on what the PlayStation 3 actually is."

Late last week, I had a conversation with an insider here in Japan. The insider has worked in the gaming industry for many years. He recounted an off-the-record conversation that he recently had with Sony Computer Entertainment management. Some of it is obvious and some is surprising, but here is what the insider had to say:

Kutaragi is interested only in consoles and technology. He does not care about the market. Some SCE officers disagree with his approach, feeling that the company should be more market sensitive. Kutaragi does not care. Nintendo has shown that it isn't only about powerful technology and graphics, but the PS3 isn't geared for that market at all and is intended for a very specific customer.

Within Sony, the different divisions have discordant views on what the PlayStation 3 actually is. Some divisions view the machine as a game machine, while other divisions view it as a home electronic device (like a TV or a video player). Some SCE officers are worried about hitting the console's target consumer. As a game machine, it's very expensive for many players and not exactly something parents would buy for their children. As an electronic device, the inclusion of a game player could be off-turn for those only interested in electronics and Blu-ray. There's concern within Sony that both groups could be alienated.

It's not possible for most developers to calculate the cost of making PS3 games. And it doesn't help that even last month, Sony kept delaying development tools. Many small and medium-sized developers are not making PS3 games, because costs are astronomical. Instead, they are switching to the Wii, the DS and the Xbox 360. Everyone sees developing for the PlayStation 3 as a risk.

Sony Boss: PS3 is 'Future Proof'

CEO Stringer calls Xbox 360 a 'transitional product.'

Risk versus potential reward. Sony CEO Howard Stringer admits Sony's company's strategy is a risky one. "The price of the PS3 is high, but you're paying for potential," Stringer said. What about Sony's competitors, their prices are considerably lower than PS3's two skus: "Obviously, it's a higher-risk strategy as all new inventions are. But if the PS3 lives up to its total potential, then I don't think anyone will be worried about Nintendo or Xbox's cheaper price."

Stringer continues with a jab at Microsoft's Xbox 360's tech, "When you bring into new technology, do you go for a cheaper transitional [product], or do you take a chance on future-proof, higher technology which will keep you going for many, many years?" Coming from Stringer, that's a big punch thrown from the biggest set of hands at Sony.

Ultimately, words between executives mean little more than girls at the mall fighting over the first spot in line to see the next Matthew McConaughey flick. What really matters is whether or not consumers will share Sony's vision of the PS3 as a potential reward and a system that will last them for several years, nevermind if consumers will acquiesce with the notion of the Xbox 360 as a transitional piece of hardware.

When asked about Stringer's comments pegging the Xbox 360 as a transitional piece of hardware, Microsoft told 1UP the following: "It's the consumer response that will ultimately be the deciding factor. Xbox 360 offers the high-definition, connected entertainment experiences that gamers crave, and consoles continue to fly off the shelves. Xbox 360 will have a 10 million unit head start and an expected catalog of 160 high-definition games by the end of 2006. By June 2007, our vibrant online community will be on track to host 6 million connected Xbox Live members and Xbox 360 will be available in nearly 40 countries by end of next year. We're offering more games, a better, more advanced online experience, all at a price point that actually makes sense to the consumer, and we're doing it right now."

PS3 Games to Cost over $60?!

Ok guys this is scary, it's like the Sony execs are afraid to break the bad news there already asking us not to kill them when it becomes official. We already knew games were going up in cost from 50-60$ because well games are huge now there ... well... epic. With budgets almost as high as blockbuster movies we knew the price was on the rise. But apparently as i suspected months ago that bluray player isn't going to drive just the PS3 itself skyward price wise. Since sony is requireing games to also be released on bluray (even if they do not require added space over a DVD as most if not all of them won't since... lets face it 360 and ps3 games will be generally exactly the same). We've seen the blank media retail already ranging from high 20's into the 30$ range for a single blank Bluray media, in comparison to the 5-10cents for a blank DVD... While studios will get significant price cuts for the production and bulk manufacturing the fact is the same for dvd's they get it cheaper than our 10 cents per dvd as well, except that ratio of high expensive will still exist.

Who's gonna pay for the higher media costs? Not sony, they still have to make profit on the games to make back the 400-500$ on each console they are loosing on each console. The studios are already complaining because games are so expensive to develop so they really aren't going to take the hit. That leaves us with poor old Joe Consumer and his mom.

Don't Believe me? Well guess what the PSM magazine for August seems to be letting the Sony execs dance around and try to beg for forgiveness in advance for whats sure to be 70-80$ games in the future for the PS3. Heres the quote from PSM August:

PSM: Can we expect PS3 games to be priced in the same range as Xbox 360 titles?

KH: Generally Speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc-based games are maybe $59 on the high end to $39 on the low end. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say "PS3 Games now $99.99." I don't think consumers expect software pricing to suddenly double. So, the quick answer is that we want to make it as affordable as possible, knowing that there is a set consumer expectation for what software has cost for the past twelve years. That's kind of the best answer I can give you. So, if it becomes a bit higher than $59, don't ding me, but, again, I don't expect it to be $100.

Theseis was never going to be on the PS3

A story posted earlier claimed that Theseis by track7games was being cancelled for the PS3. track7games says on their site that it was never coming out for PS3 in the first place, but is coming out for Xbox 360 and PC.

PS3 price must drop in 2007, says Ubisoft boss

Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot has warned that while his company is optimistic about the prospects for the next-gen consoles, Sony must be prepared to drop the price point of the PS3 in 2007 if it is to compete effectively with the Xbox 360.

Speaking to business news agency Bloomberg, Guillemot expressed the view that while the PS3 will see enormous demand from early adopters this year, the price point could be a major stumbling block in the following months.

Ubisoft has committed heavily to the next generation with updates to existing franchises, as well as new titles such as Assassin's Creed and Wii exclusive Red Steel, and its recently revealed forecasts for the coming years are very positive for the next-gen systems. The French firm expects 40 million consoles to be sold in the US alone in 2008.

PS3 Powered By Apple?

Untrue web rumors spark over homepage image.

July 7, 2006 - Earlier today, message boards across the web were set on fire with the latest PS3 rumor. Was it a new system configuration? A newly redesigned controller with tilt sensing AND rumble? Perhaps even a new price point for the PS3 itself? No, the genesis of the discussion came from a curious addition to the official PlayStation 3 website.

Astute visitors to the next generation console's homepage witnessed smoke and an Apple logo prominently displayed between the system's PlayStation 3 insignia and the controller for a half-second or so. This promptly spurred rumors that Apple and Sony might be working together on the system. A few hours later, the PlayStation 3 homepage was updated, with the smoke and Apple logo removed entirely.

The image that ignited the firestorm.

Was this cause for conspiracy, or a poorly loaded Flash plug-in? Sony representatives told IGN this shortly after the fiasco was corrected: "In a recent update to the PlayStation 3 section of the playstation.com website, an external error was made during the upload process and the Apple icon was mistakenly placed on the site. We immediately fixed the problem and apologize for any confusion this may have caused."

In more specific terms, the Apple Flash templates weren't entirely exorcized of all their layers (including the one with the Apple symbol) when they were initially uploaded to the official PS3 website. The result was the temporary Apple logo while page loaded and the mania took off from there.

Mystery solved.
