If you like ogling hardcore Sony hardware, well, IGN's got you covered. The site received its PS3, unwrapped it (slowly) and snapped photos of the goodies. What did the site's freebie box contain? A USB cord, an AV cable, a LAN cable and what looks like a complimentary HDMI cable. And that's weeks before consumers get a crack at the console.

The guy in charge of both systems hopes to make it happen.
But as much fun as launch days bring, they can also bring about the worst in folks. I pray that everyone will be safe and that they?ll make this an experience to remember for good reasons. And with that said, this list was inspired. This is a download of my experience of over twenty-plus years of gaming and having been a part of six console launch days. No, I?ve never had to stand on line without knowing that my system was reserved. But I?ve spoken to enough people and accumulated enough knowledge to share. And with that said, here?s my list of guidelines to insure that your camp-out in front of Best Buy, Target, Circuit City or Toys R Us is safe and not in vain.
Source: Devron @ WordPress"Don't have a PS3 pre-order? Launch is gonna suck. If only, if only you worked at Best Buy, then you could take home consoles by the truckload. Right? Nope, not according to one insider who claims that Best Buy is attempting to lock all staff out from getting a console."
In news that goes hand-in-hand with Sony's earlier announcement regarding their 2006 financial revisions, the company has further revealed they're also lowering the shipping forecast for the PSP. The initial target for the fiscal year was around 12 million units, and they've dropped that to 9 million.
In that earlier article, Sony cited lower-than-expected performance of the PSP as one of the primary reasons for lowering their expected overall profit revenues. Other reasons centered on the reduced price of the 20GB PS3 in Japan and the inclusion of HDMI ports in all PS3 models.
But this isn't the end of the road for the PSP. According to Sony's Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda, the company is planning to "rethink" their PSP strategy, saying: "We'll have to increase the ways of enjoying the PSP, with the development of software and peripherals. Sony Computer Entertainment is currently investigating solutions."
However, at the same time, Sony maintained its insistence that they'll hit their target of shipping 6 million PS3s by the end of March 2007. They are also standing firm on the other numbers: 400,000 for launch day in the U.S. (Nov. 17), 100,000 for Japan's launch (Nov. 11), and around 1 million units shipped before year's end.

Sony has officially stated its intentions to prosecute companies for what it calls "grey importing" of its products from other regions to Europe. This, of course, includes the PS3, which has experienced a well-known launch delay over the Atlantic.
This announcement comes immediately after Sony's court victory against Hong Kong-based online retailer Lik-Sang (the second time the two have butted heads); this time over Lik-Sang's selling PSPs to European customers. The judge ruled in favor of Sony, and upheld Sony's claim that various "intellectual property rights" had been violated by the retailer's actions.
Further, Sony reinforced intentions to prosecute other retailers who sell the PS3 - launching in less than a month in Japan and the U.S. - to European citizens seeking to score a system for the holidays. As Sony stated:
"The law is clear, grey importing PS2, PSP, or PS3 into the EU, without the express permission of SCE is illegal. Therefore, we will utilise the full scope of the law to put a stop to any retailers who chose to do this."
When prompted to explain the reasons behind the policy, Sony responded that they are trying to "protect" European consumers "from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, is not (in regards to the PS3) backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software, will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs, and will not be covered by warranty."
As for possible repurcussions involving consumers who indirectly takes part in this illegal "grey importing," such as those who advertise PS3s on eBay and offer to ship the system overseas, a Sony representative currently had no comment.

Okay, you hardcore computer nerds, here's another reason to pick up a PS3 this winter: Terra Soft has announced Yellow Dog Linux v5.0 for the console.
It's the company's next-gen Linux operating system, which provides an end-user experience that should greatly surpass previous installments. They've built upon the old Fedora Core 5, and they've now implemented the next generation "E17" desktop so as to provide a brand new - and unparalleled - level of function and interface aesthetic. And despite the technical mumbo-jumbo, the company insists this particular version is designed for "all users of all ages and all levels of experience."

There were 20 PS3 listings on the eBay at the time of this announcement, but no bids had been made...when users attempted to click through to the seller's page, they got eBay's white screen of death: "Invalid Item." "This listing is unavailable," the page read. "If the listing was removed by eBay, consider it canceled." Awwww...
Thus far, presale listings on eBay have been tolerated, but there are certain restrictions according to the rules and policies listed on the site. One such restriction involves the availability of the item, which must be within 30 days of the date of purchase. Therefore, PS3 auctions that finish up by tomorrow would - technically - be allowed by eBay. However, this may not be the reason the online auctioneer yanked the listings; it's probably due more to the fact that the seller had yet to pay full price on the item. If you haven't paid for it yet, you don't own it.
Furthermore, as kind of a footnote to the previous rule, eBay could have another problem regarding the preorder deposit. Just because someone had put down $100, it doesn't necessarily mean they're obliged to pay the remaining balance and actually take possession of the system.
But whatever the reason, they ain't there anymore. So you lucky ducks with preorders itching to post the PS3 might have to wait until November, while you nuts willing to pay absurd prices for it will have to wait right along with the ducks. ...or something like that.

One of the biggest announcements at this year's Tokyo Game Show came from Sony's camp, when they revealed they'd be dropping the price of its lower-end PS3 in Japan. The drop brought the 20GB model down from $499 to $429 (about 49,980 yen); the 60GB model would still have an "open-ended" retail price tag.
Soon after this announcement, North American analysts expressed some doubt and concern; UBS' Mike Wallace even went so far as to dub the move "a questionable business decision and a sign of weakness on the part of Sony." But despite this reaction, it appears that price drop was just the beginning. This past weekend, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper cited a study by Enterbrain, Inc., Famitsu magazine publisher, as expecting "further price reductions" and a vastly expanded software catalogue for the PS3 by this year's holiday season.
As a direct result, Enterbrain has predicted the PS3 will outsell its biggest next-gen rival in Japan, the Nintendo Wii, by the close of 2007. However, they did make a point of saying that the Wii would win out in the short-tem, predicting total Wii sales to hit 5.47 million by March, and the PS3 to have 4.13 million in that same time period.
And despite the European PS3 launch delay, Sony has officially stated their goal of shipping (not selling, mind you) 6 million PS3s by the end of March. Nintendo wants to ship that many by the end of this year, though, and recent reports indicate they may actually surpass that goal.

As the PS3 launch in November inches ever closer, we're finally starting to see some U.S. television ads and other bits of PR from Sony's camp.
Here's the television ad you're likely to start seeing every two seconds.
If you were worried you would have to go on eBay and spend over $1,000 to get a PlayStation 3 once it came out, don't worry. You can just go on eBay now and spend over $1,000 on a PS3 pre-order and save yourself the hassle OR just get a Free Playstation 3 Pre-Order from here!
"Already, at our launch titles, we're getting up close to the 25GB limit that we have on our Blu-Ray discs this year," he claimed. "Next year we'll raise that to 50GB, and I'd expect that we?ll be getting close to that in the fairly near future as well."
Speaking in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz journalist Rob Fahey, Harrison decried suggestions that the Blu-Ray drive had been included in the machine purely to push Sony's agenda with regard to Blu-Ray movies.
"It's got nothing to do with movies," he responded. "DVD is not sufficient capacity to power the kind of data consumption, or to feed the data consumption needs of Cell and RSX - just purely as a gameplay device, we need Blu-Ray to supply the kind of data that PS3 games use."

Under basic agreement with SCEI, Terra Soft was granted a unique opportunity to develop and bring to market a complete Linux OS for the Sony PLAYSTATION 3. In development of Yellow Dog Linux v5.0, Terra Soft integrated and enhanced code from Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Sony Group, and Fedora in order to offer the following:
Kaz Hirai, infamous for saying things that get him in trouble, revealed that Sony will not create a brand for their game download service. What is more entertaining is his insistance that we just refer to the network as just "Playstation 3" because there is no "Playstation Offline". So is he planning to ship that hard drive full of games? Um, no.
Next Gen has just posted an exclusive interview with Sony?s Kaz Hirai, which reminded me of a rather confusing antic that (The artist formerly known as) Prince pulled back in the 90s. Between the mumblings of vague launch details and a short supply of units on hand, Mr. Hirai disclosed that he isn?t interested in giving their downloadable game service a proper name. Bad daddy:
What we don't do however is have a brand name for the network service, you know, like PlayStation Online or PlayStation Live, and this is because we don't we don't see a PlayStation offline. What I'm trying to say is that it doesn?t matter if you are enjoying content from a Blu-ray disc or you are enjoying content you just downloaded from the network, at the end of the day it's all PlayStation 3 so we don't differentiate between content, and I think that makes a clear point between us and some of our competitors, who like to differentiate how the consumers get the content, that's the difference in the strategy or the basic philosophy towards the online service.
And yet, he?s wrong. It?s not ?all PS3? because the games don?t exist out of the box on the hard drive. We have to go exploring and buy these things, and blog about them. Simply put, the industry needs a word for that service. You know, for that thing, there ? inside ? oh dammit, the PS3 network!
Now, we can?t fault them for not wanting to create a brand. That?s smart. Clearly, that largely unknown Xbox Live strategy was a total failure for the other guy (cough cough). Who needs another word for a new medium of game distribution right? This could bring about a new era! Maybe we?ll also stop referring to the web as ?the Internet? and start telling people to look for us in their computers. ?Destructoid? Oh yeah, it?s in there. If you have that cable or phone connection thing just look inside your computer.?
Maybe I?m being too critical, and not truly appreciating where he?s coming from. After all, when PS3 games automatically appear in your executive office, the need to discuss which games can be found ?at the store? versus ?on the PS3 network? becomes too much of a hassle. He just wants to help minimize the confusion. While we do appreciate the gesture, I?m pretty sure we?ll just call it the PS3 network quietly amongst ourselves. Shhhhh.
Canada gets to have all the fun- preorders for both the PS3 and Wii starting on the same day. Now doesn't that sound like a blast?
After we all found out yesterday that an extremely limited number of PS3 preorders would be available at EBs and GameStops around the U.S., a lot of us must've gotten up bright and early today.
Perhaps due to the problems experienced during last year's Xbox 360 preorder ordeal and the system's subsequent short supply, the biggest exclusive game retailers in the country cut down drastically on this year's PS3 preorders. Most stores were limited to only 8 preorders, although some were allowed 16, and as of this morning, the blitz was on when more than 3,500 EBs and GameStops opened their doors.
And of course, the preorders disappeared faster than Danica Patrick on a straightaway: EB and GS have officially updated their websites with the following depressing information for anyone who wasn't completely on the ball this morning:
"Due to high demand and limited quantities, our US in-store preorder for the PlayStation 3 has ended."
But it's not all bad news. Firstly, yesterday's announcement stated that half the available PS3s for launch will be going to Best Buy...who aren't accepting preorders. Therefore, if we do the math, 200,000 PS3s should be on Best Buy shelves across the country on November 17. Furthermore, American gamers determined to land a preordered PS3 may be able to head north to get that invaluable receipt:
The message continues: "Information regarding the launch date of our Canadian in-store preorder will be posted when available. Online console preorder information coming soon!"

There's been a lot of complaining about the high price of Sony's latest console, and yet, this survey indicates it's a lot of hot air. People aren't nearly as put off as you might think.
According to a new 100-page media report, released today by a small research firm, the majority of U.S. consumers don't have any problem with the PS3 price points ($500 and $600). Sony has repeatedly said they're not concerned about the retail price of their system, and it appears any concern may have been unnecessary.
These results came from a sample of 2,000 online interviews conducted with 12-54-year-olds and weighted against 2004 census data. The report also points towards the possibility of the Nintendo Wii "playing spoiler" to Microsoft and Sony by targeting a wide demographic ("across all ages and genders"), in contrast to strictly younger or older hardcore gamers.
Hello Everyone,
One of the most beloved video game icons in history has been confirmed for the next-gen for quite some time, but only recently have we gotten a close look at the fleet-footed blue hero. The Tokyo Game Show provided an up-to-date presentation of the PS3 launch title, and without a doubt, there's a serious amount of promise jammed into the blazingly fast title called, Sonic the Hedgehog.
First off, most Sonic fans won't be surprised to find out the PS3 Sonic will feature a couple new characters. Sonic's partner in crime this time around will be Silver the Hedgehog, who sacrifices some speed and power for amazing Telekenesis abilities. In the demo showed at both E3 and TGS, attendees could gain control of Silver and experiment with those mind-based skills. You could grab ahold of boulders, crates, and even cars and fling them at the enemy, and the atmosphere for Silver's playable area appeared bleak and war-torn.
