Man accused of stealing $180,000 in Xbox, PS3 scheme

DENVER – A 27-year-old Boulder man is accused of buying new Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles, taking off the serial numbers and putting them on older equipment and then returning them to get the money.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Yewchoo Ng stole more than $180,000 from Target, Amazon, Buy.com, Best Buy, Circuit City, Sears and Wal-Mart.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says Ng would put the older, inoperable equipment in the boxes of the new equipment before returning it to the store for a full refund on several different credit cards and store-issued gift cards.

He would then sell the new video game consoles on eBay or other online shopping Web sites.

Ng is charged with one count of mail fraud and if convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, plus restitution.

Sony: 'More free PS3 services planned'

Sony's worldwide president Shuhei Yoshida has said he is looking at advertising and business partnerships as a way of funding more free services for PS3 and PSP users.

"We're more open about approaching and bringing services in to PS3 and PSP," Yoshida told GamesIndustry.

"We can't support all the needs of the consumer and there are great companies providing services on the PC already - so we're very open to provide the opportunity to those companies to reach our user base as well.

"We like to provide as many services as possible for free - we already provide our network access for gameplay for free - and the interesting thing about the network side and the Internet business is that there's a variety of revenue sources."

When asked about funding its forthcoming VidZone service, Yoshida said he is looking at "advertising and so on".

He explained: "Those are things we're looking at, and learning how we can provide a service without people having to pay - but we still get our operation running with funding from somewhere so that we can maintain the level of quality we want."

Sony's free service VidZone will launch early in 2009, giving users access to music streaming and offering the option of porting downloads to a PSP.

For those following the progress of Hurricane Ike throughout last week, we were able to track the storm’s real-time movement from Life with PlayStation. (See the screenshots below)

We’re also really excited to share that this new lifestyle service is running in parallel with our Folding@home project. Essentially, this means that while you’re taking a stroll on Life with PlayStation, you’re automatically helping Stanford University to work towards curing diseases such as Alzheimer’s and various types of cancers. For those familiar with Folding@home, we’ve made some enhancements for more advanced simulations of protein folding and support for wider variety of simulations, in addition to adding a unique ranking system showcasing top contributors from around the world.

Free PS3 Firmware update (v2.43)

Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up about PS3 firmware update (v2.43). Unlike previous updates, firmware v2.43 is specific to the Japan region, and only PS3 users there will be required to install the update. PS3 users in all other regions will not be prompted to download v2.43. However, if you manually initiate a firmware update by clicking on “System Update” under the XMB’s Settings icon, the v2.43 update will be available, regardless of where you are located.

Users outside of Japan do not need to perform this update if your PS3 system software is on version v2.41 or later. However if you do perform the update, it will not cause any issues with your system or add any new functionality.

Here's why Blu-ray will be Dead by 2012

Planning to buy a Blu-ray player? Hold on. It's already battling public indifference, technical problems, laughable features and downloadable movies. Is it any wonder Blu-ray is doomed to fail? Here are five reasons why it's heading for the grave...

1. HD movie downloads

OK so the picture quality's not quite there yet, but Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and others have already seen the future of movie viewing at home - and it doesn't come on shiny 12cm discs.

Instead services like iTunes, Xbox Live and Vudu already offer HD movies over the internet, enabling you to see the movies you want without having to hack down to the video store in the pouring rain.

With fibre-to-home broadband slowly being rolled out in the UK, who knows what the next few years will bring.

2. BD-Live

Have you seen the demos? BD-Live is a joke. It's a second-rate attempt to offer interactive features that HD DVD did first and much, much better.

It won't work on old Blu-ray players (they don't have the persistent storage) and may not work on new ones: it's not mandatory for Blu-ray player makers to include it in the hardware they sell.

Result? Large doses of confusion and frustration for anyone (un)lucky enough to buy a Blu-ray disc with BD-Live features on it.

Killzone 2 Four New Images (Multiplayer)

Without a doubt one of the most anticipated games on PlayStation 3, Killzone 2, is once again ready to pose for some new images.
