Pre-Order Killzone 2 At Best Buy, Get Free PS3 Exclusive Theme

You're bound to see a whole lot more of these in the near future, just because Killzone 2 will most certainly inspire retailers to take advantage of its destined blockbuster status.

You've probably already seen it by now - the e-mail should've gone out to all PlayStation Network users - but Sony and Best Buy have teamed up to offer a little bonus to those of you who pre-order Killzone 2 at Best Buy. It's this picture right here; an exclusive (and free) PS3 Theme that won't be available to anyone else. It's not exactly an earth-shattering incentive, but it's interesting to see retailers other than GameStop toss out a pre-order goodie every once in a while. Of course, GameStop will probably have some sort of pre-order promotion themselves, and we're just waiting around to see what it is...unfortunately, it can't be a beta code, like they did with Resistance 2, but they can think of something. At this point, what PS3 owner isn't at least mildly interested in pre-purchasing Killzone 2? All it takes is $5 and very little effort on your part, so you should always pay attention to extra incentives. In this case, while there's bound to be KZ2 Themes available for download, this particular Theme will be restricted to Best Buy pre-orders.

Sony struggles with creation of its virtual world

Michael Marsh, an 18-year-old gamer from Norwalk, Conn., wanted to set up a gay/straight alliance club in PlayStation Home, Sony's new free 3-D virtual world component for the PlayStation 3.

The problem was that the words he was using - "gay," "lesbian" and "bisexual" - were being filtered from text chats and were not being allowed in the naming of clubs or in postings in club forums. Marsh, who is straight but supports gay rights, said he raised the issue with Home community managers during the private beta test, but the problems persisted after the public beta introduction of Home on Dec. 11.

"I can understand if they're filtering out profanity, but if feel like it's discrimination," Marsh said. "By blocking a word like 'gay,' which is a preferred term by the gay community, you're encouraging it as a bad word."

A poster that goes by the name of StreetskaterFU has claimed that he has devised a method of hacking into PlayStation Home’s servers for downloading, uploading and deleting files.

Free Xbox 360 Kicks Free PS3 Butt on Black Friday

Microsoft says Xbox 360 outsold PS3 3 to 1

The console wars are still raging even though all three of the top-tier consoles are getting older now. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are battling for the gamers dollars and Microsoft has claimed a victory over Sony for the all-important Black Friday shopping dollars.

Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 had record-breaking sales over the Black Friday/Thanksgiving weekend. Microsoft giddily notes that the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by a margin of 3 to 1 and turned in a 25% increase from Xbox 360 Black Friday sales in 2007.

Microsoft says that it also saw record-breaking sales for its software with Xbox games like Gears of War 2, Fable II, and Lips turning in the highest game attach rate of any console at 8.1 games per console.

Microsoft Senior VP of Interactive Business Don Mattrick said in a statement, "We entered into the Black Friday sales period with cautious optimism, knowing that dollar for dollar, Xbox 360 offers more social entertainment value than any other console on the market. Record Black Friday sales in the U.S., coupled with our existing global install base of 25 million and an online community of more than 14 million Xbox LIVE members, have laid the groundwork for continued global sales momentum in 2009."

Microsoft claims that the Xbox 360 has outsold the PS3 week over week across Europe since the September price drop bringing the basic Xbox 360 system to $199.99 worldwide. The Jasper revision of the Xbox 360 was recently launched with revisions to make the console cooler among other things.

Killzone 2 Street Date Announced, Two New Guns Revealed, and Preview Coverage!

In case you missed X-Play on G4 yesterday, we announced that Killzone 2 will officially be in stores on February 27th, 2009 in the United States. G4 also unveiled a new video revealing two brand new weapons, the Bolt Gun and the Flamethrower, which can be seen below.

Another video from developer Guerrilla Games sheds light on the multiplayer mode called “Warzone,” a mode that rotates through different gametypes until the match ends.
