Target offers 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' PS3 game sale

Target Corp. stores began offering a 'Buy 2 Get 1 Free' game sale for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 in a regional promotion.

At select Target stores, customers who purchase any PS3 titles will receive a third at no additional cost.

Titles advertised include Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Call of Duty: World at War, Guitar Hero World Tour, Skate 2, and Shaun White Snowboarding.

The ad disclaims more than 40 titles eligible for the offer.

Meanwhile, retailer Amazon.com this month extended an video game accessories sale for the PS3, Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 and Nintendo Co.'s Wii to the end of Jan.

Upcoming Free PS3 Firmware (v2.60) Update

The PS3 firmware update (v2.60) is designed primarily to enhance the system’s media capabilities. The key feature is a new Photo Gallery application, which delivers a suite of tools for sorting through and displaying your digital photo collection. Digital pictures can be organized in groups according to various criteria, including the camera used to take the photos, the event date and time, colors in the photos, as well as the number, ages, or facial expressions of the people pictured. You can also create slideshows set to music and build photo playlists with an easy-to-use interface. The Photo Gallery application will need to be installed separately from the XMB after you update your PS3’s firmware. To install the Photo Gallery application, go to the Photo section on the XMB, select Photo Gallery and press the X button.

Four Things Sony Can Do to Turn the Tide for the PS3 in 2009

Arstechnica feels they have the solution for Sony in order to make their PS3 more successful this year.

Their suggestions are broken down into four main areas as follows:

1) Drop the freaking price: The hard truth is, in the current economy people aren't willing to pay $400 for what is primarily a toy.

2) Let's get serious about online: What do we want? Cross-game invites. We want voice chat in all games. We want... well, we want Xbox Live on the PS3. Don't tell me that's impossible to do for free—Valve created what amounts to a PC version of Xbox Live with Steam's social features, and that doesn't cost anything.

3) Stop making us wait for Thursday: Nintendo has Monday, Microsoft releases Arcade games on Wednesday, and Sony forces everyone to wait until Thursday. PS3 owners get Rock Band songs, demos, and even games later than everyone else.

4) Remember that games are for fun: Sony wants you to know that the PS3 is a high-end, high-class piece of technology. This is a recession. People are pinching pennies, and they want to have fun.

The Wii looks fun for kids and adults, the 360 is inexpensive and features an easy to use online system for playing with your buddies, and the PS3 always comes off as a luxury item. It needs to look fun!
