Top Ten Playstation 3 Games

We continue our VGC special articles with our staff’s top 10 Playstation 3 games. The list includes a couple of surprises...

Each PS3-owning member of the VGChartz staff was given the opportunity to vote for their favourite PS3 games and below are the results of that poll - the VGChartz staff top 10 PS3 games are:

10 – Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice.

Yes, we clearly have a couple of Disgaea fans on the staff roster - Disgaea 3 sneaks in at No.10. It’s a sequel to the hardcore, turn-based, strategy RPG that was popular on the PS2. In Disgaea character units have a limit to their movement and attack ranges, based on their level and the weapons they have equipped. There are also other special game factors unique to Disgaea that let you take advantage of a 3D battle map.

Its old school graphics hit its scoring in the graphics department, but for fans of SRPGs and those willing to overlook slightly dated presentation there's potential for hundreds of hours of gameplay, an engaging story, and an addictive gaming experience.

PS3 firmware 2.50: How to access PlayStation Recovery Menu

This may be old news for some but we thought we would let those who don’t know in on it. We want to share with you the PS3 firmware 2.50 and the how to access PlayStation 3 Recovery Menu.

The PS3 firmware 2.50 does now have a cool feature where you can access the recovery menu and here is how to do it, there is also a video below. The list is like this 1. Restart system, 2. Restore default settings, 3. Restore file system, 4. Rebuild database, 5. Restore PS3 system, 6. System update.

This is what the PlayStation Forum says:
1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

Looks like you're going to have to manually select Network Update for this one again, folks. Firmware 2.50 is now available for your PS3 and it includes these features:

• The [BD/DVD Settings] option under [Settings] has been renamed as [Video Settings]
  Also, multiple video content items can be now played in order. You can edit this option in [Video Settings] -> [Sequential Playback]
• A scene search feature has been added to the [Video] category. You can easily select a scene that you want to watch. This feature can be accessed from [Scene Search] in the control panel that is displayed during video playback.

At first glance, the burlap-skinned mascot of the anticipated new Sony PlayStation 3 game LittleBigPlanet lacks those predecessors' panache. But Sackboy exhibits an engaging Everyman appeal, from younger players to experienced gamers, in the groundbreaking title due Oct. 21 ($60, rated for all ages). "Sackboy is not just a little cute character. It's actually you," says Kareem Ettouney, art director of Media Molecule, the U.K.-based developer of the game.

Sackboy's small shoulders bear huge expectations. A wide-appeal hit could help the PlayStation 3 gain momentum in the console game wars currently dominated by the novice-friendly Nintendo Wii. Since both systems were released nearly two years ago, the Wii has outsold the PS3 by more than 2 to 1 (11.9 million vs. 5.2 million), according to market tracking firm The NPD Group.

"This is huge for (Sony)," says Adam Sessler, host of X-Play on the G4 video game TV network. "It runs a little contrary to what the PlayStation image has been in the past. At the same time, this is fresh. It gives something very distinct to the PS3 that is not available" on the Wii or Microsoft's Xbox 360.

Sony Implements Restrictive DRM for PlayStation Network Video Service

Sony to allow one official download per purchase

According to an Ars Technica article, PlayStation 3 owners who download video through the PlayStation Network Video Store are allowed one official download, and if necessary, one additional download after contacting customer service. The files cannot be backed up and moved to another hard drive or copied onto a CD or DVD.

An Ars Technica forum poster found this out the hard way after he deleted video content to make room on his hard drive and then found he could not re-download the content. Sony’s official policy is “Purchased content can be downloaded to a single PlayStation 3 or a single PSP system”, and "Purchased content can be played on a single PlayStation 3 system and up to 3 PSP systems simultaneously". Their policy on downloads is, “Content cannot be re-downloaded once it has been downloaded to either a PlayStation 3 or PSP system”.
