PS3 Firmware 3.0 to Be the Last Major Firmware Update of 2009

Sony will release the PS3 Firmware 3.0 update on September 1st for the PlayStation 3 console.

Firmware 3.0 completely revamps the information board, introduces premium avatars and animated themes and a variety of other tweaks.

While Firmware 3.0 is the last major update the PlayStation 3 will see during 2009, G4TV (linked above) recently asked Sony if this was the last update period for the calendar year.

To quote: “This is a big and significant update, so you would be correct to assume that [it's the last major update for 2009],” said PlayStation Network operations director Eric Lempel to G4TV.

He did, however, note that the release of a few smaller updates throughout the remainder of 2009 is still a possibility.

PS3-Sense writes "A video surfaced the internet showing a new bootscreen for the PS3 including the new logo. The PS3 Slim is already equipped with this new bootscreen, but the chances are quite big the PS3 Fat will be getting it also"

PS3 Firmware (v2.80) Update Coming Very Soon

Free PS3 Firmware 2.70 - a complete list of upgrades

Sony announced earlier today that the new firmware would enable text chat fopr easier in game communication. There are a few features that they did not mention, that we thought you should know about, so here they are, in the scripted order.

The complete update list:

You can now perform text chat with people who are on your Friends list. You can chat with them while you are playing a game.

- To use this feature, go to [Friends] > [Start New Chat], and then select [Text Chat]

Using the internet, you can now easily search for the lastest information about the games that you own.

- To use this feature, select the icon for the game, and then select [Internet Search] from the options menu.

You can now Copy and paste text.

- You can copy text from the internet browser and paste it into the text entry field of the on-screen keyboard to make it easier to enter text.

You can now set an option to reduce the difference in volume level between tracks to help avoid sudden, lout output.

-You can set this option in [Settings] > [Music Settings] > [Dynamic Normalizer]

UPDATE:

We almost forgot, you can also now backup your TV and MOVIES to an external drive. Added bonus.

Attachments on messages has been changed from 1Mb to 3Mb

The user profiles have been improved for significantly faster load times and downloads from the playstation store now give an estimated time for completion.

The PlayStation 3 launched in late 2006. Since then, Sony has added plenty of new features via constant firmware updates. Here are the top five added firmware update features on the PlayStation 3. 

5. Background Downloading (PlayStation 3 Firmware Version 1.60) 

Downloading content from the Playstation Store was a major pain in the early days. You have to stay on the same screen for long periods of time (in some cases, hours). Not to mention that you can't resume from the same point if you disconnected. 

Playstation 3 Firmware Version 1.60 fixes that cumbersome problem by enabling background downloading, which let gamers perform other functions while in the process of downloading. In addition, you can resume a download anytime and automatically shut down the Playstation 3 once the download is complete. 

4. BD-LIVE (PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.20) 

For the longest time, the Playstation 3 was the best Blu-ray player on the market. The main reason for its success was the ability to upgrade to a higher profile. Therefore, the Playstation 3 was able to stay ahead of the curve by upgrading Blu-ray Profile to 1.1 and then 2.0 (BD-LIVE). It isn't just Blu-ray movies either; firmware updates also added Windows Media, DIVX and Flash media support for the Playstation 3. 

3. Trophy Support (PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.40) 

Achievements for the Xbox 360 are a big success. Having a universal way to show off your video game accomplishments increase replayability and extend the life of a title. Sony saw the added value in that feature and decided to implement their own via the Playstation 3 Firmware 2.40. Now every Playstation 3 games from now on will include trophy support.

Is Sony confirming FW 2.7?

A couple of days ago, we found some strange codes and writing in PlayStation Home. We posted screenshots, and no one really knew what they were. The codes and writing are back, but now it looks as if they're actually meant to be there and hinting us about something.

Could this help us confirm the rumors of 2.7 and it's features being true? Or is someone at Sony seriously not coding PS Home correctly? Could they be subtitles from an upcoming title Sony is already hyping?

Go! Go! Firmware 2.50 now available to download

Looks like you're going to have to manually select Network Update for this one again, folks. Firmware 2.50 is now available for your PS3 and it includes these features:

• The [BD/DVD Settings] option under [Settings] has been renamed as [Video Settings]
  Also, multiple video content items can be now played in order. You can edit this option in [Video Settings] -> [Sequential Playback]
• A scene search feature has been added to the [Video] category. You can easily select a scene that you want to watch. This feature can be accessed from [Scene Search] in the control panel that is displayed during video playback.
