Vista On the PS3

On youtube mopx0 has posted a video of Windows Vista installed on the PS3, the whole process takes a day to install and vista is as slow as hell, but heres the video for those interested.

Tutorial from the youtube video page

Tutorial:
Install Qemu 0.9.1

Install Vista on your Computer using Qemu and Bochs Bios Rev 1.171 by sshwarts
-Vlite helps speed the install up, Vista's install make take a day or so
-Bochs Bios Revision 1.171 can be found here
http://bochs.cvs.sourceforge.net/boc...g&pathrev=MAIN
You may also need to add this command "-cpu pentium3" for qemu to work right
Copy the .IMG to your PS3's HDD

Open Terminal where the Vista IMG is located
type qemu -hda vista.img -m 256 -L "Location to Rev 1.171, Drag n Drop" -cpu pentium3
-the -cpu pentium3 option makes it so it doesn't BSOD with error code 7F

It will take about 25 min to fully boot (network connection and audio show up)

Japan: PS3 Catches Up to Wii, Xbox 360 on Life Support

wii_ps3_xbox360.jpg

In Japan, the Wii's lead over the PS3 shrank from six-to-one in May to just one-point-seven-to-one in June, according to Japanese magazine publisher Enterbrain. According to the publisher, Nintendo sold 235,990 Wii in a five week period ending June 29, versus PS3 sales of 139,494 and a dismal 10,964 for the Xbox 360.

If Reuters Japan's translation is accurate, I think Enterbrain's being a tad shortsighted when it claims that "[the Wii's] lead is fading" based on 30 days of numbers. The Wii's been in the lead for seven consecutive months, and it held onto that lead despite the earth-and-heavens-moving release of Konami's Metal Gear Solid 4, which is really the only reason the PS3 has suddenly (and, I believe, only temporarily) managed to almost catch up.

Why so upbeat about the Wii? Metal Gear Solid 4 was released on June 12 worldwide. It managed to hold the top sales spot for only two weeks before Super Smash Bros. Brawl (a 22-week-old game) and Wii Fit (a 31-week-old-game) managed to knock it from its perch. MGS4 has only sold just shy of 600,000 copies so far in Japan. This week, the number-two-selling Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World outsold the eighth-placing three-week-old MGS4 by over 135,000 copies.

"Fading" implies "withering, wilting, drooping, dimming, growing faint." Much as I love my PS3 and think the boost is absolutely great news for Sony, it's just dumb to call this the start of a trend. Look at the numbers any way you like, there's about one chance in a million the Wii's lead is "fading."

On a side note: I feel pretty badly for the Xbox 360 overseas, because it's a fantastic system with some terrific exclusives (from my West-blinkered perspective, anyway) and a fantastic software attach rate in the U.S. (something like 5-to-1). Why's it doing so badly in Japan? Is it a sense in Japan that Microsoft doesn't "get" Japanese gamers? The fact that the system's launch lineup was shooter, racing, and sports heavy? The lack of dating sims and RPGs and fighting games? The failure of HD-DVD to become the de facto optical format? Was it because 212 Xbox games were backward-compatible at the 360's U.S. launch, versus a paltry 12 in Japan? Did the red-ring-of-death scare that affected some 33% of earlier-gen Xbox 360s scare off Japanese consumers? Is it as controversial Ninja Gaiden 2 director Tomonobu Itagaki suggests, that in fact "economy policies" are somehow behind the 360's extremely poor Japanese showing?

Metal Gear Solid 4 Must Sell 1 Million Day One To Justify Cost

metal_gear_solid_4.jpg

Payton said the new “Metal Gear Solid” needs to sell over a million copies on the first day it goes on sale due to its costly production, but that may be a tough mark to hit given sluggish PS3 sales.

For this to happen Sony would need a miracle as high profile first part titles are hardly selling right now. To see this all you have to do is look at the sales data for Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank Future, which are Sony’s big holiday exclusives. According to VGChartz both have only sold 0.13m and 0.22m respectively after several weeks of release. Either the PS3 install base has to increase by huge leaps and bounds by MGS4’s Spring 2008 release or they need to go multiplatform.

Unreal Engine 3 Games on PS3 Delayed

PlayStation 3 architecture slows development of Unreal Engine 3 games

The PlayStation 3’s architecture departs far enough away from traditional development platforms to give game makers a sizeable challenge during the initial learning curve. Unreal Tournament III, one of PlayStation 3’s supposedly big time-limited exclusives for this holiday season, might not make it out to stores this year at all due to technical issues.

A financial update (hosted at Kotaku) from Midway Games revised estimates for the company’s third quarter with the news that several Unreal Engine 3 games would be delayed from their original intended ship dates. Midway now expects Unreal Tournament III to ship on PlayStation 3 sometime during the first quarter of fiscal 2008, which for the company runs from January to March next year.

The update does not affect the release of the PC version, which is still slated for a November ship date. Not only will PC gamers be assured of playing the game next month, but they will also be able to purchase a special Collector’s Edition tin

Sony Makes Japanese PlayStation Store Accessible by PC

Don't have a PS3 but want to download games to your PSP? Sony solves that in Japan

Thanks to the PlayStation Store, gamers can connect their PSP to the PlayStation 3 console to download classic PSone games to play on the handheld. Those without a PS3, however, do not have access to such a feature – unless they live in Japan.

Sony announced at TGS that the PlayStation Store may now be accessed using a PC connected to the web. The announcement currently appears to apply only to the Japanese market, as North American and European gamers still must access the downloadable content via the PS3.

It is unclear when or if the PC-accessible service will venture outside of Japan, but Sony is likely working on ways to sell PSP owners worldwide downloadable content.

The ability to download classic games onto the PSP came in December 2006, less than a month following the PS3’s launch. For as low as $5.99, gamers can purchase PSone classics such as Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, Hot Shots Golf 2, Syphon Filter and Tekken 2 to play on PSP.

In other PSP-related news, Sony announced new PSP Remote Play features, such as the ability to control the power state of the PS3.

PlayStation Home Delayed Until Spring 2008

PlayStation Home gets pushed back from October to unspecified time in spring

While the Sony-oriented keynote at the Tokyo Game Show held mostly positive words with the announcement of the DualShock 3 and new PSP Remote Play features, one piece of disappointment for those PS3 gamers wanting a different online experience is that PlayStation Home will be delayed until spring 2008.

Hirai apologized to the crowd for the delay and said the reason for the added wait is the makers of Home wanted more time to further develop the user interface.

The delay may not be a big surprise, as an anonymous report from a PlayStation Home beta tester indicated that several features were behind schedule. According to the report, published late August, none of the features promised during E3 were ready for the beta.

Rumble Returns to PlayStation 3 With DualShock 3

Sony announces at TGS a new PS3 controller, new PSP feature to turn off and on PS3

On the first morning of this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. President and COO Kazuo Hirai took the stage to deliver the event’s keynote address.

Perhaps the biggest news to gamers is the official return of force feedback to the classic PlayStation controller form. Dubbed the DualShock 3, the new PS3 controller adds vibration motors inside the shell – just as it is in the DualShock 2 for the PS2.

Hirai said during his speech that vibration was the single most popular request from PlayStation 3 users. Rather than mentioning the company’s previous legal position with Immersion, Hirai simply said that Sony had found a way to integrate rumble with SIXAXIS motion control – a feature that he said was not previously technically feasible.

The outward appearance of the controller is identical to the SIXAXIS, with the only hints of the added rumble feature being the new DualShock 3 logo and the additional weight. The omission of vibration motors in the SIXAXIS made the controller unsettlingly light, but in the DualShock 3, the added weight returns the controller to a more familiar feel.

Rumbling PlayStation 3 Controller Felt at EA Press Event

The long awaited return of rumble to PS3 leaked while playing Burnout Paradise

The form of the PlayStation 3 SIXAXIS controller is relatively unchanged since its first introduction with the original PSone era with the DualShock. However, different with the SIXAXIS is the omission of rumble force feedback and the addition of motion control.

While several Playstation 3 games have made strong use of the motion sensing, gamers are still clamoring for the force feedback that they’ve grown accustomed to since console generations ago.

Those inside the videogame industry are prediction that rumble will make an eventual reappearance on the PlayStation 3 – with the Tokyo Game Show being the ideal place to announce it – Sony’s press conference won’t take place until Thursday morning.
